Sort your insurance ASAB (As Soon As you Book). Already booked? Get it NOW! The timing of launching Compare+ Travel Insurance isn't accidental. Summer is coming, and if you're booked to go away and haven't got your insurance yet, you need to do it NOW, today, straight away! (Have you done it yet?... No... How about now?) Martin's oft-quoted 'As Soon As You Book' rule isn't just so you don't forget later. As he explains, it's because one of the big protections of travel insurance is to cover you in case something happens before your trip that means you can't go... Each year, in the summer run-up, I get questions like this... 'I've been diagnosed with a serious condition (eg, cancer). We can't go on our holiday as I need treatment, but the airline/hotel won't refund. What do we do?' Sadly, unless the ticket's flexible, there are no refund rights as nowt's faulty with the holiday (it's a bit like trying to argue your new tennis racket is faulty because you broke your arm using it). So I point them to travel insurance. Yet some reply: 'We haven't got round to it yet.' And that's painful, as then there's often little left to try. What counts as having travel insurance in place ASAB? Put simply...  Single-trip policies: You just get insurance to cover a specific future trip (eg, 10-17 Aug) and once that's paid for, you're done. If the trip's over a year ahead, see single-trip policies for over a year in advance.  Annual policies: You need cover all the time, from booking up to the end of your trip. So if you don't already have one, get an annual policy starting from when you book the holiday (or as soon as possible after) - not when you go away. Already got an annual policy? Great, unless it ends before the date you return from holiday, in which case you need a new policy that runs straight on, ie, starts when your existing cover ends. Most policies will cover you for issues that happen within the cover period for booked trips, even if the travel is after your renewal date (a few don't, do check).  While ASAB is the safest route, it isn't 100% foolproof. Some firms may cancel cover if you're diagnosed with a severe illness before you go (do note you need to update the travel insurer if you get new medical conditions in between buying the insurance and going on the trip). Quick key travel insurance tips Going to the EU? Ensure you've a valid (free) GHIC/EHIC -over 2m expire this year. The 'Global Health Insurance Card' (GHIC) and its predecessor, the EHIC, give access to state-run hospitals or GPs, mainly in European countries, for the same price as a local. So if they don't pay, you don't either.  Over two million expire this year, check yours. When it comes to renewing, beware shyster sites trying to charge you for 'fast tracks' or other nonsense. Never pay to get a GHIC, they're always free. See how to safely get a free GHIC.  These cards are useful to have alongside travel insurance, as often it can mean if you do get medical treatment, you don't need to pay the excess. Do you also pay for mobile & breakdown cover? If so, your best option may be a top packaged bank account. While they're called bank accounts, they're more like a package of insurance products linked to a bank account. You'll generally pay £15 to £20/mth for them, but if you'd be buying the insurance separately, especially for couples and families, it can save you £100s. What if my travel insurer unfairly turns my claim down? Knowing how firms will respond to claims is tough. You can always formally complain to the insurer and, if rejected, go to the free Financial Ombudsman to adjudicate.

Martin's car finance update: Millions mis-sold are due £100s back   Now the regulator says many have been misled by the claims firms they used too, and should complain...  In March, the financial regulator, the FCA, announced a £9bn mass redress scheme for 12m mis-sold motor vehicle finance agreements. We've a totally free complaint tool, but an avalanche of claims management companies (CMCs) have also been getting in on the act, and they take a chunk of any money you'll be paid. The FCA has just warned against misleading CMCs, saying it has seen 'far too many examples of poor practices'. Yesterday, it took the important symbolic step of launching a template letter for you to complain - more in help complaining about Claims firms below. First, a quick briefing... 12m mis-sold motor finance - complain now if you haven't already. The mass redress scheme means firms must contact you if you were mis-sold, even if you don't complain. Yet I'd still do a FREE complaint now, as that officially puts you ahead in the payout queue, and reduces the risk of being missed because they don't have your (correct) info. It applies to car, van, motorbike, or campervan PCP or hire-purchase finance from 6 Apr 2007 to 1 Nov 2024, usually for personal use. It doesn't matter if you've paid it off, or no longer own the vehicle. If you had multiple deals, you could get multiple payouts. Though if it was interest-free, it's not covered. Also see help claiming for a deceased relative. For now, there's no way to know if you were mis-sold without complaining. The whole point is they didn't tell you what they were doing! See the three ways agreements were mis-sold under the FCA scheme. The scheme has been delayed due to court challenges. July was the planned kick-off date, though now it's likely delayed to November-ish due to four legal challenges - and payouts will take time after that (unless the court challenges radically change things). So you should no longer expect money in 2026. Tool 1: The FREE MSE Car Finance Complaint Tool. Our free complaint tool both finds out if you have a complaint (of any of the three types) and, if you do, it complains. Just put in your car finance details for each agreement and it auto-builds an email based on my draft, and fills in the right address to send it to. PS: We don't data-mine or store your info. Tool 2: Forgotten if you had car finance or lost the paperwork? Credit reference agency Equifax has a free Car finance checker app tool, with info on all the car finance records reported to it since 2007 (most, but not all, firms' policies), including info on any joint agreements. To get it, you'll need to sign up to its free basic Equifax account. Then take the info it gives and plug it into our free complaint tool. See how to do this for someone deceased. New. Unhappy with your claims firm or think it treated you unfairly? There's no need to use a claims management company (CMC) for the FCA's mass redress scheme. After all, the finance firm must contact you if you were mis-sold, even if you don't complain, so why give up 30%+ of your payout? Though for the more militant court route, some legal help is worth looking at. The two questions I usually get about CMCs are: 'How do I escape my CMC firm and do it myself?' and 'I didn't sign up, why are they charging me?'. Well, you're not the only one concerned. The FCA says it's seen 'serious and unacceptable harm' by many CMCs and has issued guidance. More in our CMC complaints news but in brief... Work out if you have grounds to complain. The regulator says this tends to boil down to... - Being signed up without agreeing to it or being pressured into it (eg, filling in a social media 'car finance mis-selling checker' without realising it signed you up to a claims firm). - Being misled about the service, costs, or chances of success. - Not receiving information you should have been given, such as fee details or cancellation rights. This includes if you were already represented by another firm and it didn't check, if it didn't give you a key info summary, a clear breakdown of fees, a 14-day cooling-off period, or tell you about free alternatives or explain how to make a complaint. Don't see the point in using a CMC any more? If you don't have grounds to complain, but just feel you want to DIY now, you have a right to cancel your CMC contract, though it can charge you a 'reasonable fee that reflects the work carried out'. The charge should broadly match the amount of work done so far, yet most car finance complaints are still at an early stage, so that shouldn't be much.  So do ask what the cancellation fee would be (you may need to pay it now) to help you decide. If it doesn't feel right, the FCA says to people: "Do not simply pay any exit or other fees demanded if you want an independent check first. CMCs and law firms are obliged to make it clear to customers, including on their websites, that free Ombudsman services are available." See point 4 for help on that. Use the FCA template letter to tell the firm what you want it to do. If you were signed up without consent, misled, or treated unfairly, the FCA says you can ask to cancel for free. If the firm wants to charge you to leave, the FCA says any fee must be reasonable and reflect the work carried out.  The FCA launched a new CMC template complaint letter yesterday (link downloads the letter) to send to your claims/law firm. It was a bit clunky, so I gave it a call straight away with some polite feedback (as many who use CMCs aren't those who like DIY complaining) and I'm thankful it's updated it on the back and I think it's much more helpful now. Most importantly, it's a symbolic statement of intent that the regulator is signalling consumers who believe they've been misled or treated unfairly should challenge it. Important. Escalate it if you're not happy with the response. Firms often reject complaints thinking you'll just give up (all firms, not just CMCs). Yet you don't have to accept that. If you don't think it has resolved your complaint fairly within eight weeks, you can take the same complaint to the relevant ombudsman to adjudicate for free. It should tell you in its paperwork, website, and complaints process which of the two Ombudsman is right (if not, ask the CMC - it has to tell you). - Claims Management Ombudsman (part of the Financial Ombudsman Service) if they're FCA-regulated. - Legal Ombudsman if they're regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. PS: Frustratingly, if you were passed from an FCA-regulated claims firm to a solicitor, you may need to complain separately to each firm and then go to both Ombudsman.

Got solar panels? Are you being underpaid for the energy you generate? Many can switch to earn £100s more High energy costs mean more people are getting into solar panels. They can reduce your bills, as you use the electricity generated so don't need to pay for it. And, equally, if you produce excess energy you can get paid to export it to the grid. If you've not got panels yet, our Solar Panels: Are they worth it? guide takes you through who they're good for and how to get them.  But our focus today is to ensure those who already have panels max their earnings. This is key right now - summer brings more daylight so most generate more electricity, and may even use less as the heating's off. Export rates vary massively, from just 1p/kWh up to 30p/kWh - so it's worth checking what you're getting now. Our Exporting solar-generated electricity guide has the full info, but here's a quick zip through it to see if you could gain...  When you got your panels matters. If they were installed before 1 April 2019, you'll be on the old Feed-In Tariff (FIT) system; anything after that, you'll be on the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) system... PANELS BEFORE APRIL 2019: Should you switch away from your Feed-In Tariff? There are two elements to the FIT payments.... - The Generation Tariff: If you got solar panels in the early days of FIT, between roughly 2010 and 2016, you got a big, guaranteed rate for generating electricity, even if you used it yourself. It was locked in for 20 or 25 years and uprates with inflation (was RPI now CPI). In later years the rate dropped a lot (see FIT rates over the years). This can't be changed, so it is what it is. - The Export Tariff: You are also paid separately for exporting energy to the grid. You get either 5.4p per kWh for panels installed before August 2012, or 7.6p per kWh for those installed after. These payments are also locked in for 20 or 25 years. The rates aren't that high, though they're guaranteed to be increased by inflation each year.  While you can't change the Generation Tariff, you CAN change the Export Tariff by switching to the Smart Export Guarantee below, if that's better for you. More pros & cons in Switch my Feed-In Tariff to a Smart Export tariff? PANELS AFTER APRIL 2019: You're already on the Smart Export Guarantee: Here the price depends on the provider so the simple question is whether you can find a more lucrative provider.  The Smart Export Guarantee is a marketplace - find who pays the most. It's done via a contract, so it could be a year-long fixed tariff, it could be an ongoing variable deal. It's important to check. There are different types of SEG tariffs, depending on your circumstances... Smart Export Guarantee tariffs Current rates Annual earnings 'typical' home (1) Type 1: Same firm for solar export + energy supply + have home battery. Rates vary depending on time of export. 5p to 29p per kWh  Compare smart SEG rates £75 to £435 Type 2: Same firm for solar export + energy supply. You need to sign up to the firm's elec or dual-fuel deal. See below for info on when this is worth it 5.6p to 16p per kWh Compare energy-linked SEG rates £84 to £240 Type 3: Standalone solar export tariffs. Here you just get the SEG tariff from the provider. 1p to 6p per kWh Compare open-to-all SEG rates £15 to £90 Type 4: Energy firm fitted your solar panels.You can't switch to these. As for how to decide if this route works for you when you get panels, that's in our Should I get solar panels? guide. 15p to 25p per kWh Compare top energy firm-fitted SEG rates £225 to £375 (1) Based on 50% exported of a 3,000kWh of electricity generated - will vary with your usage and location. Should you change your energy provider to get a better Smart Export Guarantee rate? For those on a bog-standard Price Capped energy tariff (so that's anyone without a special deal like a fix, tracker, EV or solar tariff), the answer's a simple yes - you won't pay any more for energy and can bag a better SEG rate.  If you regularly switch energy provider and you're on a cheap fix, for examoke, the key question is whether the gain from the extra SEG income will outweigh any excess cost you pay from not having the best energy rate. Right now... - The cheapest energy fix is currently 2% less than the Price Cap (see our Cheap Energy Club comparison), and - Linked SEG tariffs typically pay THREE TIMES more than standalone. So, we crunched the numbers and worked out that if you EXPORT MORE THAN ROUGHLY 15% of the electricity you use, even if you're a regular energy switcher, you're best to focus on the better SEG rate. See top SEG rates for more. How to switch Solar Export Guarantee provider. Switching is easy if you already have a FIT or SEG tariff - just apply to the new firm and give it your export 'meter point administration number (MPAN)'. It can take up to six weeks, depending on the provider. If you've recently had panels installed but you've not yet signed up to the SEG, the first step is getting smart meters if you don't already have them. You'll then need to apply for a new MPAN for exporting before signing up to a SEG tariff - we've full info on how to get an export tariff if you've not done it before.
