There's a wealth of free cash bonuses, so almost everyone will count as a 'new customer' somewhere. Better still, there's the first bank switch deal with over £200 upfront cash since the start of the year - and surprisingly, it's from HSBC, which rarely does this (except for higher earners). Below we'll cover... - Top free cash switching deals, plus high earners' premier deals. - FAQs - including can I multi-switch to make £1,000s? - Overdrafts are high-cost debt - slash it to 0%. Switching is usually easy & hassle-free: To get the bonuses, you need to use the bank's seven-working-day switch service (so it takes roughly 10 days in reality). It will close your old account for you, move your money over, and shift all Direct Debits & standing orders. All payments to the old account are auto-forwarded too. The vast majority of people find it a piece of cake, though you will need to pass a not-too-harsh credit check. The top FREE cash switch bonuses New. Can I switch multiple times to make £1,000s? As Martin explained in his Question Time podcast last week, you can use a burner account to grab multiple bonuses while keeping your main account. As Justin emailed in April: "Dear MSE Team, I thought you might like to know that between my wife and I, we have pocketed £2,930 in bank switch bonuses since May 2025 - less than a year! That's on top of bonuses obtained in previous years." Q. Will switching bank affect my credit score? One extra search on your credit file shouldn't make much difference (though many in a short time can). Some lenders do score you down short-term for switching bank accounts, as they like evidence of longevity. For belt 'n' braces safety, if you're imminently (within a couple of months) about to apply for a mortgage or an important, needed debt, prioritise that and avoid switching until after. Otherwise, one bank switch isn't really an issue. More in how switching banks affects your credit. Q. What about packaged bank accounts, any good? If you shell out out £100s each year for family travel insurance, breakdown cover, and mobile phone protection... packaged bank accounts - where you pay a monthly fee, and get lots of insurance products thrown in - could save you big money. Yet they're only good if you'd be paying for the standalone insurance anyway. Right now, our top pick is Santander Edge Explorer* as it gives switchers a FREE £180, which effectively covers nearly 11mths of its £17/mth fee. You get world family travel insurance (max age 75), mobile cover for the whole household (max four devices), UK & European breakdown cover for the account holder(s), plus 24/7 remote family GP access. Not far behind is Nationwide FlexPlus, which gives switchers a free £175 on a similar £18/mth account. For full info and options see our packaged bank accounts guide. Q. Are subscriptions moved when you switch? As we explained above, Direct Debits and standing orders are moved for you. Yet the third category of regular payments - known as recurring payments, eg, Netflix, Disney+ etc, where you give the long number on your debit card when you pay - aren't moved. You need to do these yourself.  If you do forget, though, normally they'll notify you that 'your payment card no longer works' so it shouldn't be too big an issue. See recurring payment help. Overdrafts are the worst mainstream debt How to slash the cost, possibly to 0%  Frankly, unless you're never overdrawn, ensuring you've a cheap overdraft option is crucial. Too many think 'credit cards bad, debit cards good'. For those overdrawn, it's more a case of 'credit cards bad, debit cards worse', because overdrafts' now have typical 40% rates - nearly double bog-standard high-street credit cards. You CAN switch banks if you're overdrawn. Though there's no guarantee the new one will offer you an overdraft or even match your existing one. Most of the banks below have overdraft eligibility checkers you can use before applying to see whether it's likely you'll qualify. Full info in top overdraft accounts, but in brief...  A possible £250 0% overdraft, and, if you switch, £200 free cash. First Direct* (full details above) gives accepted new switchers a free £200 cash which can help reduce what they owe, and many get a £250 ongoing interest-free overdraft too (credit score dependent, and it's the standard 40% above that). So, this is good for smaller overdrafts, or those who just dip in. You will have to 'switch' the overdraft over yourself. While all your Direct Debits and standing orders will be moved as normal, expect your old bank to ask you whether you can pay the overdraft off, or whether you want to keep the account open while you do (it varies by bank). If you do keep it open, payments to the old account are unlikely to be forwarded to the new one so you may need to arrange to move them yourself. PS: Club Lloyds has a £100 0% buffer too; Nationwide a £50 buffer, but also pays £175 to switchers. Lower interest rate overdrafts. App-only Starling* has no 0% overdraft but does offer overdrafts with rates typically lower than most other banks. Depending on your credit score, you could get a 15%, 25% or 35% overdraft, so check your eligibility on its site before you apply. Still, at these rates it's costly so you'd be better to try a... 0% money transfer credit card. One of the few, rare, specialist Money transfer credit cards may allow you to do a special transaction to pay money into your bank account, so you then owe it at 0% instead, and you can use that time to clear the debt. You can get up to 14mths at 0%, though there's a fee of 4%. You need to understand how it works though, so do click the link above to read the guide.  In usage terms though, its big strength, especially for larger amounts, is it takes you out of the overdraft world and shifts it to a card. Even if you can't clear the card within the 14mths, the interest rate after is 24.9% compared to most overdrafts at 40%. Better still, once the debt is on the card, if the 0% period is running out you can try to do a 0% balance transfer to try and keep it interest-free. Martin's 4 top tips to cut your overdraft... The rate isn't the only thing to focus on. Our Cut overdraft costs guide has full info, but here are Martin's 4 most important tips: Aim to repay a fixed monthly amount. Eg, if you're £500 overdrawn, 'paying' £100 means aiming to be £400 overdrawn at month end. "We just found a pension worth over £60,000!!" Martin: There's £75 BILLION forgotten in old pensions, bank accounts, savings, investments & Child Trust Funds  So check if you're due & reclaim for FREE (including for a deceased relative) It's jaw-dropping. People have lost touch with so much money - £75 thousand million pounds' worth - it could pay for the UK's entire annual defence budget! So, it's potentially seriously profitable to spend a bit of time checking. The full help's in our find lost accounts guide (if you find it easier to listen, there's also my recent reclaim lost assets podcast). Some proof of the pudding before we start... Rod & Jo emailed last week: "Hi Martin, thought I'd let you know about a big win we had thanks to you. We thought my husband had at least one workplace pension that we couldn't locate and after trying all the ways recommended to try and find them, we registered with Gretel as suggested by your website. Amazingly, we found a pension worth over £60,000!" If you use our tips below and get reunited with your money, we'd love you to tell us about it. How do people lose track? It mainly happens when people forget to update their contact details with firms, especially when combined with the companies themselves merging, changing name, or going bust. Then there's also the more obvious cause of losing track of deceased relative's assets. Estimated 'lost track'  Average per account Pensions (changing job & losing track of old workplace schemes makes this the most common) £65bn in 3.3m pensions £19,600 Current and savings accounts £4.5bn in 14m accounts £320 Investments £2.9bn in 1m accounts £2,860 Child Trust Funds (All children born between 1 Sep 02 and 2 Jan 11 had one, some without knowing it) £1.7bn in 750k accounts (Source: Gov.uk)  £2,240 NS&I including Premium Bonds £560m in 2.4m accounts £240 Source, unless stated: Gretel (other estimates vary, but all have one thing in common... it's a shedload of lost cash). After a time, accounts may go beyond lost and become 'dormant'. At that point, funds can be transferred to the Dormant Assets Scheme, which can release surplus funds for The National Lottery Community fund - though even if this happens, you can still get yours back. What counts as dormant varies, but as an example, for a bank account it's usually 15+ years of inactivity and no contact. How to reclaim old private or company pensions? What you do depends on how much information you have... - Dig out paperwork and try contacting past employers first. - No luck? Try the Govt's official Pension Tracing Service tool. You tell it the name of the employer or pension provider you remember and it has up-to-date contact details (including those that have changed name or been taken over). - Once you have details, contact the pension provider (you'll usually need to provide ID). Alternatively, try Gretel which you may find easier. See our full how to find old pensions for more. Premium Bonds, current accounts & savings accounts. The My Lost Account service brings together a few asset tracing tools in one place. Fill in the form with details and past addresses, then select which of over 70 firms - banks, building societies and the state-backed NS&I (which incudes Premium Bonds) - you want it to check with, to try to reconnect you with lost accounts. You have to tell it every firm to search, which can be cumbersome, though there's no limit. If it finds something, it'll usually let you know by email or letter. My Lost Account says it can only trace accounts marked as lost (not just those you've forgotten), so if you know the firm, do approach it directly first. While this is the quasi-official route, it's also worth doing the following... Gretel - the fintech firm that may just be the easiest way for all these... The fintech firm Gretel is free and works in a very different way. With it, you don't need to remember the names of your past workplaces, pension, investment, savings or bank account providers. It will do a 'soft search' on your credit report - one that doesn't impact your 'credit score' - to check your identity and match you with prior addresses where you may have accounts registered. How does it make money? Financial firms have a responsibility to try and track down lost accounts, especially before they are shifted to the Dormant Assets Scheme. That's expensive, so some subcontract some of the work to Gretel to do it for them. Is it better than the official routes? Yes and no. It's far easier to use as it does it all for you, results are quicker, and while it's relatively new, I'm starting to get good feedback. Yet it only works with institutions signed up to it, so there can be many providers missing compared to official routes, which is why I'd do both. Though once you're signed up, it will redo your search every two weeks, so if a new firm joins it and there's a new hit, it'll let you know. How to reclaim old investments? Always to try and dig out any old paperwork if you can and contact the firm direct. If not, which official source you go to depends on whether it's a unit or investment trust, insurance company-based investment, investment through your bank, or individual shares. For the correct place for each, see our find old investments info. Again though, Gretel may help. Child now aged 15 to 23? Check now for a missing '£2,200' Child Trust Fund (CTF). The Child Trust Fund was the predecessor to the Junior ISA, a tax-free way to save for children with money locked away till they were 18. Yet there was one big difference... the state automatically added at least £250 to open it. All UK children born from 1 Sep 2002 to 2 Jan 2011 had one, but some parents and children were unaware, and many have lost track. If you know who the provider was, contact it. If not, HMRC has a handy tool you can use to find out. Children aged 16+ can do this themselves, or parents can do it for under-18s. The average amount missing is £2,200 but sums will vary hugely depending on whether parents added to it, and if the money was saved or invested. See how to Reclaim your Child Trust Fund for full help. Find deceased relatives' lost assets too. If you are the executor, administrator, or someone else with authority to act, you may be able to claim assets on behalf of someone who's died. You can use all the searches above, often selecting that you're searching for someone other than you. Though at some point in most processes, you'll be asked to prove you're legitimately doing so (eg, death certificate, Letters of Administration, or Grant of Probate). MONEY MORAL DILEMMA My ex owes me £4,000 I paid in mortgage fees - how do I get it back? My partner and I recently split. We had a five-year fixed-rate mortgage, and he wanted to transfer it to his new house. I agreed so we wouldn't have to pay an £8,000 early repayment charge. But he hadn't completed on his new place when we sold our house, so we each paid £4,000 towards the charge. I've since discovered that when his new house sale goes through, the £8,000 will be refunded directly to him. I'll get nothing, as my name's not on his new mortgage. What should I do?
