Home insurance prices up another 19% New. The Compare+ Home Insurance tool Martin: 'I've long listed tips & tricks to slash costs. Our new tool now does much of it for you, including the unique Price Impact Indicator' Last week I warned car insurance prices are dropping - don't accept a renewal unless it's far cheaper. Yet home insurance prices are still up 19% year-on-year, and a huge 80% up on just five years ago, meaning it now joins the list of pelicans... big bills. So today we fully launch the new... Compare+ Home Insurance tool The easiest way to see what it does is try it! It does far more than just compare - we've a host of added tools, info and tricks to pare your costs right down. If you've used our Compare+ Car Insurance tool then, simply, it's that, but for buildings & contents cover.  Please do feed back on our new home insurance tool & read more about it in our Compare+ Home Insurance FAQs. A few of you may've already seen it, as we trialled it in December (though since it's been polished & souped up), to prove it did the job. It did. Paul emailed last month: "Thanks to your helpful advice I decided to do something about my renewal. I received an extortionate quote for over £700, but have just gone for an alternative company and almost identical cover for just £189 [a saving of £500+/yr]! I am thrilled!" How the Compare+ Home Insurance tool works... - You speedily fill in a questionnaire. Answer our Compare+ Home Insurance question set (we borrow MoneySupermarket's - we're part of the same group. If you've used that before, your answers are auto-filled). As you go through the questions you get the unique...  Price Impact Indicator  During the design phase, as I laid out how I wanted Compare+ to work, I interrogated the team as I often do (politely but incessantly) about every question it'd ask to check, 'Is it relevant?' The answer was always, "insurers won't quote without it so we need to ask", then I wanted to know, 'Does it impact the price?' and asked them to examine the data, across millions of quotes, to see.  The results were surprising, eg, when asked what locks you have, you'd assume better conforming locks cut cover costs - some people may even buy them for that reason. Yet the data surprisingly shows it has an almost negligible impact on price. I was so excited about the info I wanted it in the tool. So now every question has a 'low', 'mid' or 'high', telling you whether the answer impacts the price, where you can click and read about it exactly.  As one trial user said: "Really useful to know how worried [or not] I should be about stuff. Keep up the good work MSE!" PS: If we continue to get good feedback on how useful it is, I'll ask the team [groan - the team] to add one to Compare+ Car Insurance too. - You then get your benchmark quote to start the saving. This is your cheapest quote from the MoneySupermarket comparison, so you can see a price straightaway, but of course let's try to beat it... - Compare+ shows which other comparisons to add in, and in what order. We've always told you to use as many comparisons as you've time for, and the new tool doesn't change that. Different comparison sites include different insurers, and even where the same firms are listed, they can have different prices for them - as Lizzie emailed: "I've found exactly the same policy on two different comparisons recommended by MSE, and one has it for £60 a year cheaper. Glad I read your suggestions!" - We'll tell you if you're too early, too late, or pure Goldilocks. While it sounds crackers, how early before renewal you get a policy can have an up to 25% impact on what you're charged (we get this info from analysing up to 650,000 quotes). So the tool will tell you when to come back if you're too early (don't worry; you can save info so you needn't re-enter it), and if you're too late, we've calendar reminders so you time it right next year. - Personalised tips on how YOU can cut costs. After analysing your data, we'll show you other ways to try to cut your costs further (all are trial and error though), such as... Will upping the voluntary excess (the amount you pay towards a claim) save you money? Can you pay annually rather than monthly? Can you save by combining your home and car insurance? As with any insurance, check the policy details to ensure it's the cover you want, and that the insurer is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority before you buy (all on Compare+ are). If a claim is unfairly rejected, remember you have a right to take 'em to the free Financial Ombudsman. Finally... why we launched Compare+ Home Insurance After many years of trying to get it done, in 2022, I was delighted we'd finally built my car insurance 'compare the comparison site' concept into a tool. It was called Compare+ Car Insurance and had lots of tricks and tips, but crucially ranked which sites you should use in your circumstances in order. Yet, within days, 'legal challenges' cut off our access to the data needed, so we had to stop some of the 'compare comparisons' part of it. I was worried that'd make the tool redundant, after so much work had gone into it, but then was pleasantly surprised that actually it still got amazing feedback as it was the extra tips and tools people loved.  After it bedded in, it left us with an internal debate, about whether to build a home insurance version when we knew we couldn't do the 'compare the comparisons' element. Martin: STOP OVERPAYING ON ENERGY ASAP Bad News. April's new Energy Price Cap likely to rise more than previously thought: UP 6%. Fix now to save even before the price jumps (typical £200/yr saving) Over 80% of homes in Eng, Scot & Wales overpay for energy as they're on Price Capped tariffs (I've listed the main ones below). And I'm afraid it's about to get worse. The Price Cap moves every three months and the April to June Cap's now predicted by British Gas, E.On & EDF to rise 5% to 7%. And as the change mainly depends on average wholesale rates from 18 Nov to 17 Feb, the predictions are now pretty firm. Without intervention, it's virtually unthinkable that the Cap won't rise - the only question is by exactly how much. So compare to find your cheapest fix and lock in a rate now, to save instantly and prevent the price hike. The Price Cap for the rest of the year, while it's somewhat crystal ball gazing, is currently predicted to stay roughly at April's level. On one of the following? You're Price Capped, likely overpaying & should sort now... British Gas Standard Variable | EDF Standard (Variable) | E.on Next Next Flex  Octopus Flexible Octopus | Ovo Simpler Energy | Scottish Power Standard Get today's cheapest FIX and instantly save 6.8% over the current Cap. A fix means the rate you pay for energy can't change (though use more and you'll pay more). The current cheapest is almost 7% less than today's Cap, which is around 13% less than it's predicted to be after April. Yet there are only a couple of cheap fixes left - many have been pulled as underlying wholesale rates have risen. So getting it done ASAP is safest. Which fix is your cheapest, plus the exact saving, depends on your region and how much energy you use. Our Cheap Energy Club comparison gives a personalised result. Important: When you compare, you'll see the annual saving against the current Cap's rates - remember, it is likely to rise in April and beyond. Slash £100 off energy STANDING CHARGES. EDF recently launched its Simply Tracker Extra tariff*, which tracks the Price Cap, but with £100/yr lower daily charges. So for those with lower usage (under £135/mth-ish) where the standing charges make up a larger portion of the bill, this can mean a decent saving. You don't need to have a smart meter unless you're on prepay, and there are £25 per fuel exit fees. For mid to higher users, a fix will very likely beat it. Sophisticated tariffs, which save some more. For most, a fix is the simplest and safest way to guarantee a saving, but there are alternatives which are better for some. These include specialist electric vehicle tariffs and rapid price-change tariffs including Agile Octopus, Octopus Tracker and Tomato Energy's Smile.  Even with cheaper tariffs I'm struggling to pay bills - what do I do? It's always worth talking to your energy firm. Be polite and straight with it, and make sure you explain if you're vulnerable. There can be hardship & debt grants from energy suppliers. Savings rates dropping after Bank of England cuts base rate from 4.75% to 4.5%. Comparing easy-access savings is tough at the moment as they're 'variable' rates, and many have been cut since last Thursday's UK base rate decision, but not all (... yet?). Here are the current top payers, including whether they've moved or not... - Top easy-access (variable): Cash ISAs are just savings accounts you never pay tax on & the current top payers beat top normal savings, so are winners for those who haven't used this year's £20,000 ISA allowance. Trading 212 is 5.03% AER* (min £1) for newbies via that special link & Moneybox is 5.02% (min £500) - both HAVE cut rates since Thu, so hopefully they'll hold a bit. The top normal easy-access rate is Coventry BS at 4.85% (max 4 withdrawals a year), but its rate hasn't dropped, so it may still do. The top that has is Atom Bank at 4.6%, but you only get 3% in months you make a withdrawal. More in top savings & top cash ISAs. - Top fixed-rate savings: You can lock into these rates for the whole term, but only if you're happy that you can't access the cash for that time. Yet the rates you can fix at are dropping. For 1yr: Top fix is SmartSave at 4.66% (min £10,000), top fixed cash ISA is Cynergy at 4.45% (min £500). For 2yrs: Top fix is GB Bank at 4.63% (min £1,000), top fixed cash ISA is Hodge Bank at 4.41% (min £1,000). Full options in top fixed-rate savings & top fixed-rate ISAs. If you get them, be aware the Department for Work & Pensions has been sending letters by post to many people saying they must now apply to switch to Universal Credit. Five tips to get... the cheapest private medical insurance Ends Wed. Plus, if you're young(ish), fit(ish), go to the gym & fancy a £10 Apple Watch, you may get medical insurance that virtually pays for itself The NHS and its staff are national treasures, but the pandemic and cost of living crisis have seen it struggle. As a result, according to Martin's X poll, one in five have a private medical insurance (PMI) policy, and demand seems to be growing. PMI lets you bypass the NHS for faster non-emergency medical attention, covering the cost of private consultations, treatments and operations and sometimes mental health too. It's a lifestyle choice, unaffordable for many (from under £20/mth for 25-year-olds, to £30+/mth for 55-year-olds) but if you're considering it, here are brief must-knows. Full help in Cheap PMI. 1) Do a comparison and get £100+ cashback. There are many comparison sites out there, but most are just 'white labels' of two engines (meaning while they have different names, underneath it's roughly the same comparison). So we worked to get the best perks for you on top of each white label. Both engines have many policies in common, yet as they can give different prices, it's worth checking the two... Eg, do check... 1) Which hospitals can you use? Bigger choice = increased cost. 2) What treatments do you want to cover? Options can include improved cover for cancer and mental health. Full help in picking a PMI policy. Annoyance alert: Both sites want your phone number so they can contact you to discuss a quote. There's no way to opt out. It'd of course be awful if you accidentally put in a non-working phone number - we hope that doesn't happen. Quick! Young(ish), fit(ish), go to the gym &/or fancy a £10 Apple Watch? Vitality may pay for itself... Vitality Healthcare* is a PMI policy which encourages you to stay fit and active, and if you do, provides serious rewards. For some younger people, the perks may cover the PMI fees... £10 Apple Watch Series 10. Since Nov, you've been able to get the latest model £399 Series 10 for an upfront payment of £10. Vitality has already taken the marketing off its site, but we have it confirmed you can still do this until Wed. To do it in time, you'll need to get the insurance by then and then you have until the end of Fri to order the watch (a few may miss out if they need medical underwriting). If you are timed out, the watch is still available but just at £39 upfront from Saturday - still a cracking price. You then pay the rest monthly over three years, but what you pay's reduced depending on how many 'activity points' you earn - do the top level (eg, 12,500+ steps for 5+ days a week or earn points via gym workouts, Parkrun etc) and you DON'T PAY ANY MORE towards the watch. Even for lesser activity, the saving is strong. Up to 50% off many Virgin, Nuffield and PureGym monthly fees. These are straight discounts, not linked to activity. While they're off the full price, and many may be able to bring that down by negotiating (see cheap gyms), this is still likely to be a big discount, and works even if you're already a member. Eg, the Virgin gym in Sheffield's listed price is £64/mth, but you could get it for £32/mth. There are also discounts on Caffè Nero, Odeon, Vue, Samsung and others. Best to get Vitality via one of the comparison site links above. Both list it, so as well as seeing how it compares with others, that means you can also get the £100+ cashback on top. How this could stack up... This works best for under-45s who pay for a gym and will earn the max activity points over three years. We got a £50/mth quote for a 35-year-old in London, so that's far more than the cheapest equivalent quote from other firms, of about £20/mth. Yet if you were buying an Apple Watch anyway, at the top activity level that's £120/yr saved on payments, and a further £60/mth fee reduction at a local Virgin gym; in other words, those savings are more than Vitality's cost. So it's worth doing the sums for your situation. Note: as with all firms, your policy cost will likely increase yearly. 2) Already got PMI? Be careful switching if you've already used it for treatments. PMI prices usually rise at renewal each year, so before you know it, they're far higher than when you started. So, no surprise, a comparison will often reveal BIG savings. This is great if you've never claimed - switch away. But if you've had treatments within the last five years, and the issue reoccurs within two, a new provider will likely exclude it, as it's a pre-existing condition (do check). If that's an issue, the only route is to haggle with your current provider to try to reduce the cost.  3) The excess has a huge impact on cost. This is the amount you'll pay towards each individual claim or - better but more expensively - towards all claims each year. An almost £60/mth policy with no excess reduces to under £40/mth with a £500 excess. So think about whether you want a 'cover everything' policy or only a 'cover big things' policy.  One radical strategy is to combine a cheaper, very high excess (£1,000+) policy with self-insuring, where you put cash aside each month in top savings. Then if you need to pay the excess or have smaller treatments, you have the money. This way, you're covered for bigger treatments, but for the rest you're NHS or pay-as-you-go private. 4) PMI can be a great employment perk, even if your employer doesn't pay (as it's often cheaper), but... if you need treatment and claim, and then later decide to leave your employer, check whether you'll be able to continue your membership with the healthcare firm on the same terms. If not, you may be unable to get a new insurer to cover that pre-existing condition. 5) Confused or can't find what you want? Use a broker. If you're confused or have conditions that make finding a policy hard, get assistance from a member of the snappily titled Association of Medical Insurers and Intermediaries. These brokers can answer questions about cover, particular insurers' records, rules and more. Most are free to you because they take commission from insurers if you get a policy - though do check before getting any advice. And, as always, with any insurance, if you feel your claim's been unfairly rejected, go to the ombudsman. Picking the right policy's only half the journey - the provider needs to deliver when you claim, too. But that's tough to predict. So it's worth knowing, like all insurance, that these are regulated policies where you've a legal right to be TREATED FAIRLY. If not, make a formal complaint, and if it still doesn't stack up, you can take it to the free Financial Ombudsman Service to adjudicate.

MONEY MORAL DILEMMA I booked a trip with a friend and now her fiancé won't let her come - what do I do? I've been away with the same friend for 10 years now. Last year, after she got engaged, we arranged a trip as usual. Then her fiancé decided to come too, booking somewhere ludicrously expensive for them, and leaving me to pay the full cost of our hotel room. This led to an argument. This year, I asked if he was coming and she said no, so I booked everything. Now she says her fiancé won't let her come because of last year's argument and has threatened to leave her if she does.
