Must-read if you pay interest on credit card debt New. Now three cards offer 32mths INTEREST-FREE on debt shifted to them - vastly better than it was We've a new system to help you decide which balance transfer's best. Can you save £1,000s? It's been over two years since three cards offered such long 0% balance transfer deals, letting you shift debt to interest-free until October 2027. A 0% balance transfer is where you get a new card that pays off debts on existing cards for you, so you now owe it but at no interest. That way, more of your repayments clear the actual debt, rather than service the interest, getting you debt-free quicker. Before we get to the 0% best buys, four need-to-knows... 1. Find which top card's most likely to accept you via our eligibility calc. It shows your odds of getting each card before applying, minimising applications to protect your credit score. 2. Go for the lowest fee with a 0% period long enough to clear the debt. Longer balance transfers usually have a bigger one-off fee, so if you can go shorter, it's cheaper. Unsure? Play safe & go long. 3. If a card is an 'up to', check the 'backup' rate. With up-to cards, some accepted customers can get worse deals. Unless the eligibility calc says you're pre-approved - so you get the headline deal - beware cards with a poor backup rate (the alternative rate some are given). 4. Usually rejected when you apply? Top-pick newbies' 0% balance transfers All links via eligibility calc (at providers' request) HSBC Up to 32mths 0% (3.49% fee) 24.9% rep APR after 0% ends Joint longest 0% & strong backup rate As it's an 'up to', not everyone gets the headline deal, yet at least here the backup rate is still decent, so if you got it you'd still be doing pretty well. - Headline rate: 32mths 0% (3.49% fee) - Backup rate: 26mths 0% (3.49% fee) If you're pre-approved in our eligibility calc, you'll definitely get the full 32mths 0%. MBNA Up to 32mths 0% (3.2% fee) 24.9% rep APR after the 0% ends Joint longest 0%  The same headline 0% period as HSBC with a slightly lower fee, but a far worse backup rate. - Headline rate: 32mths 0% (3.2% fee) - Backup rate: 14mths 0% (3.49% fee) However, go via our eligibility calc and, if eligible, you'll be pre-approved, and it'll tell you which rate you'll get. The headline deal's worth it, but with the backup, you'd probably do better elsewhere. Barclaycard Up to 32mths 0% (3.45% fee) 24.9% rep APR after the 0% ends Joint longest 0%, but higher fee While the backup rate's marginally better than MBNA, the fee on the headline rate's worse. - Headline rate: 32mths 0% (3.45% fee) - Backup rate: 16mths 0% (3.45% fee) If you're pre-approved in our eligibility calc, you'll definitely get the full 32mths. If not, Barclaycard says about 20% of those accepted get the backup rate. Tesco DEFINITE 30mths 0% (2.95% fee) 24.9% rep APR after the 0% ends Longest DEFINITE length 0% & lower fee This card has a materially lower fee than the other long ones. So if you can clear within 30mths, it's cheaper. Plus, crucially, everyone accepted gets the full 30mths 0%. - Headline rate: 30mths 0% (2.95% fee) So if you're not pre-approved for the others and have good odds here, it's likely a decent choice. Tesco DEFINITE 18mths 0% (0.99% fee) 24.9% rep APR after the 0% ends Low-fee DEFINITE length 0% If you can repay quite a bit quicker, this 18mth card is in a sweet spot, as it's still pretty long but the fee is just £10 per £1,000 shifted. All accepted get the full 18mths. - Headline rate: 18mths 0% (0.99% fee) Barclaycard Up to 14mths 0% (NO FEE)  24.9% rep APR after the 0% ends Longest NO-FEE 0% If you can repay quickly, this is a winner, as there's no cost at all. Yet the backup rate is substantially shorter. - Headline rate: 14mths 0% NO FEE - Backup rate: 7mths 0% NO FEE If you're pre-approved in our eligibility calc, you'll definitely get the full 14mths.  If not, Barclaycard says about 20% of those accepted get the backup rate, so you may be safest going for the NatWest NO-FEE card with its headline 12mths and better backup of 10mths (if eligible, our eligibility calc will show you as pre-approved and will tell you which rate you'll get). Martin: I want to explain why this table looks a little different "I'm worried about the growth of 'up-to cards' and particularly the fact some 'backup rates' are so poor in relation to the headline. So I've redesigned the table above (a lot of playing about to get there) to make it more prominent, and I'm asking the team to gradually roll this format out across the site and eligibility calculator. "As well as being good to help you decide (eg, the HSBC card is far more attractive than the other two joint-longest 0% cards when you factor the backup rate in), by making it overt and including it as one of the factors in our card rankings, I hope it may put pressure on providers to improve the backup rate (or, even better, do a Tesco and ditch it altogether)." Top POOR CREDIT HISTORY balance transfers If you can't get the top cards, our eligibility calc will show alternatives, including some specifically for those with patchy credit histories. Some even accept those with past defaults or county court judgments (CCJs). There's a big thing to watch though... The interest rate after the 0% ends could be above 34.9%, so compare that to your current rate. If your current card's lower, ONLY shift debt you're certain you can clear within the 0% period, so you're not stuck at the higher rate after. If your current card's the same or higher, shift as much as possible. Top-pick poorer-credit 0% balance-transfer cards Virgin Money (link goes via eligibility at Virgin's request) - DEFINITE 16mths 0% - 3% fee - 29.9% rep APR after the 0% Long 0% and accepts some past credit issues. All accepted get the full 16mths at 0%. Even if you've had CCJs or defaults, you may still be accepted if you've recent history of managing credit well, a UK bank account, and either personal income of £7,000/yr or household income of £15,000/yr (including non-salary income such as pensions). Fluid (link goes direct, as not in our eligibility calc) - DEFINITE 9mths 0% - 3% fee - 34.9% rep APR after the 0% Lower minimum income needed on shorter 0% period. You may still be accepted if you've been declared bankrupt, had a CCJ, or an individual voluntary arrangement (IVA) as long as it's more than 3yrs old. You need £5,000/yr min income, 12mths' UK address history & a UK bank account. How to use a 0% balance transfer properly Getting the right card's just the start. Here are our golden rules... a) NEVER miss the minimum monthly repayment. Or you can lose the 0%. Preferably pay it by Direct Debit (you can opt to pay a fixed monthly amount) so you never miss it. If you want to vary what you pay each month, for safety set up a Direct Debit for the minimum, then make manual overpayments on top of that each month. b) Clear debt before the 0% ends. Clear it or transfer again before the 0% ends or you'll pay the representative APR, which with all these cards is at least a costly 25%. c) Don't spend/withdraw cash on the card. It's usually at the costly APR, not the 0% rate, and it's best not to build up other debt while trying to repay what you've already got. d) Do the transfer at application. It'll then contact the lenders and transfer the debt for you. If you don't do it then, cards normally have a 60- or 90-day time limit to do it, so check that. So those are Martin's golden rules, and here are his answers to some of the questions he gets most often... Should I apply if my best eligibility score's only 20%? Cutting debt costs is important (usually only trumped by a mortgage application), so go for it. While 20% odds are low, it means it's likely two in 10 who apply will succeed - it could be you. And if you're rejected, barring a minor credit file application mark, you're no worse off. What if the credit limit they give me isn't enough? In most cases, you won't know your credit limit until after applying, though some cards in the eligibility calc will show some people a guaranteed credit limit before applying (if you've added the amount you want to transfer in to the form near the top). If you find the limit given is too low, while it's frustrating, don't just sack the card off. The application's on your credit file, so shift as much of your highest APR debt as you can to the new card (usually you can move up to 90% of the credit limit). Then, once done, go back to the eligibility calc to see your chances of acceptance for other providers' cards to move the rest. Though each subsequent application can get harder, especially if done quickly, as too many can indicate you're desperate for credit. Should I pay an equal amount on every card (spoiler... NO). List all your debts in APR order from highest to lowest. Include your overdraft if you have one (as these days, overdrafts are often the most expensive form of mainstream borrowing).   Then, if possible, focus every penny of spare cash at trying to clear the debt with the highest interest rate (APR), as it's growing quickest, and just pay the minimums on all the others. Once the highest one is clear, shift focus to the next highest. If your overdraft is the highest APR, just pay the minimums on the credit card, and let the cash sit in your bank account to reduce it, until the overdraft is gone (see Cut overdraft costs for more options). What if the eligibility calculator says I've "no chance" for all cards? That can happen, especially for those on lower incomes or with a poor credit history (see how to improve it in MSE Credit Club). Yet if your credit limits on existing cards aren't maxed out, try to see if you can shift debt from one card to another if it's cheaper. So if one credit card charges 18%, and has half the credit limit left, and the other card is at 30%, ask the cheaper card's firm if you can shift debt from the more expensive one to it, saving you cash. Even better, some cards also have 'existing-customer balance-transfer offers', eg, 12mths at 0%. See the credit card shuffle for how it works. If none of these are a goer, the priorities are repaying in the right order, as explained above, and reading this section below... In debt crisis? Get free debt help NOW The tips above are for those who can afford to meet their credit card payments and want to make them cheaper. If you can't, you'll likely need a different tack. Martin devised these three simple questions many years ago as a snap test... 1. Do you struggle to meet minimum monthly payments or pay all bills? 2. Is your total debt (not mortgage/student loan) over a year's salary? 3. Do you have sleepless nights or depression/anxiety over debt? If you answered yes to any of these, forget balance transfers, you need a stronger intervention, so get free, one-to-one debt-counselling help from Citizens Advice, StepChange, or National Debtline. They've powers to give you breathing space on your debt, or can put you in a repayment plan or similar. While this may impact your ability to access credit, it's usually worth it to get you out of the debt hole. And if you need emotional support too, try CAP. They're there to help, not judge.  Don't feel alone, there's no stigma, you can sort this. FIVE 'hidden' tools & tricks 'I saved £200+ on a Samsung washing machine - thanks for the tips' Retail behemoth Amazon is tough to beat for convenience and speed, yet many of us only scratch the surface of the discounts it can offer. We've got plenty of tips and tricks in our Amazon buying guide, but today we're going to focus on the big lesser-known ways to pay less at Amazon (plus how to make sure you're getting a good deal)... Amazon Resale: Big 50%+ discounts on often as-new returned goods. - Quickly find bargains: Use our free Amazon Resale Discount Finder. - Best for? Up-to-date branded electricals, kitchen appliances, laptops, lawnmowers, games, jewellery, household items. - Consumer rights: You've got statutory rights, but might not get the manufacturer warranty. Amazon Resale* shows and sells returned items at reduced prices. Often they're there simply because someone has changed their mind (or with minor cosmetic damage). If you're after a posh toaster for example, but can't afford the latest model, then check if Amazon Resale's knocked it down to fit your price range. It's a favourite hack with MoneySavers such as Deborah: "I got a Samsung washing machine from Amazon Resale for a bargain price of £214 - they retail at £449, so I took a chance knowing I could send it back. It arrived with two hardly-noticeable dents on the front, it otherwise looks brand new. So I'm a very happy lady, thanks for all the tips." So you know what you're getting, items are categorised by condition: 'acceptable', 'good', 'very good' and 'like new' (see what each grade means). Tell us what you're after, and it'll show you how much money you'd save compared with buying it new at Amazon. For phones, use our Refurbed Phone Finder for a wider range. - Best for? Slightly older tech, including phones, laptops, headphones, games consoles, smartwatches and cameras. - Consumer rights: All have a one-year warranty on top of your statutory rights. While Resale is mostly for current models, Renewed only sells preowned tech products that have been tested, refurbished and look like new, such as previous-generation models from Apple, Samsung and Dell. Refurbished models help the environment as well as your wallet. Stock can be limited, but we found a Samsung Galaxy Watch Active2 for £73 (£279 new), a Dyson Ball Animal upright corded vacuum for £200 (£326 new) and a Eufy G50 robot vacuum for £110 (£140 new). Amazon Outlet: Odds and ends, but worth a check for 15% to 70% off new overstocked items. - Quickly find bargains: Head to Amazon Outlet* and use the search. - Best for? Brand-new out-of-season items, such as leftover Christmas cards/gifts and lesser-known brands. - Consumer rights: You've got statutory rights. The Outlet has 1,000s of brand-new, excess-stock items which Amazon (or third-party sellers) are keen to shift. It's hit and miss, so the best way to think of it is like any store's end-of-sales clearance - it's a mix of funk, junk and a few things you may want to put in your trunk; we found some men's hiking trainers for £15, reduced from £40. Do check prices though - not everything's discounted, and even items that are may not be great deals. See our Amazon Outlet analysis. Is 47% off a good deal? Check past Amazon prices with CamelCamelCamel. Amazon can play fast and loose with what a discount actually is. Is it off the recommended retail price, the normal selling price or... something else? And, if you don't know what the discount's off, is it actually a good deal? To find out, use CamelCamelCamel's price history tracking tool. For example, a Hoover upright vacuum cleaner is currently "47% off" at £149 - but the tool tells us it was £108 in June last year. Spending £30 to £35 and not got Prime? Check if the Super Saver Delivery tool saves you cash. Usually, Amazon charges for delivery on orders of less than £35. If you're just below it, it can be cheaper to add a small extra item than pay for delivery. The Amazon free delivery tool finds suitable extras for you.

MONEY MORAL DILEMMA Should we keep our teenage son in the dark about his Child Trust Fund? We saved for our son's university education in a Child Trust Fund, which is now worth over £100,000. He turns 18 later this year, but he's recently stopped studying for his A-levels, hasn't applied to any universities and says he wants to take some time off. He's currently unaware of these savings, but we're now worried that when he is able to access the cash, he'll fritter it away.
