21 online shopping hacks & tips Tricky one this... Christmas is near and many still have things to buy, so while we want to show you tricks and tips to help, we don't want to buy into the retail fervour that leaves too many paying for the big day with a debt-ridden January. So, do a budget - a list of what you need and can afford to buy - and stick to it. Don't let discounts target your spending impulses. Then, methodically use the tips below to buy what you plan to with less hassle and cost. 1. Abandon ye shopping basket all those who enter... Log in to your online shopping account, add what you want to the basket, then fail to finish and within 48 hours some companies often send you codes to tempt you to come back and complete the shop. The most common firms reported to us seem to be Argos, Currys and Morrisons - see our list of retailers which offer abandoned basket discounts. As Suzanne told us on X: "I do this often. Has worked recently with Mint Velvet, Jigsaw, Harrods and Cos - up to 20% off." 2. Get 1% back on everything you spend (can add up to £100s for some over the year). The Lloyds Ultra credit card pays you 1% uncapped cashback for a year (paid each Jan), perfect for this high-spend period. Do all your normal spending on it, making sure, of course, you pay it off IN FULL each month to avoid the 12.9% rep APR interest. It's also a top card for spending abroad, as there's no foreign exchange fee and you get the cashback when away, too.  See our top cashback credit cards guide for a full review and more alternatives (some good ones for higher spenders). 3. TIMING MATTERS I: Some consumer rights don't last too long. By law, buy things online and unless they're perishable or personalised, you've 14 days from delivery to notify them you've changed your mind, and 14 days after that to send it back for a full refund. So, if you're buying goods for Xmas that may need to be sent back, it's worth thinking about when they'll be opened compared to when you bought. Even more importantly, whether in-store or online, if items are faulty you've 30-days to take them back for a full refund (after that, it's repair, partial refund, or replacement). So if you've bought something expensive, or techy, leaving it sitting too long in a wrapped box could cause you problems. As Martin says: "It may lose some of the romance of Christmas, but if you're buying someone an expensive gift, it is worth opening it and checking it's not faulty while you're still within the time limit to return it, just in case." But a gift receipt tends to transfer that right to the recipient. (Didn't get one? Try writing on your regular receipt that it's a gift as this may prove evidence enough). 4. Discount couriers can slash the cost of sending parcels. If you're sending someone a parcel (as opposed to getting a store to deliver it), there's still just about time to do it cheaply for Christmas. Use discount courier parcel delivery to get the big firms to deliver for less than you'd pay direct. 5. FREE Christmas gifts, spend time not money. Why not give a gift via our free printable Christmas gift cheques? It's often more meaningful, more fun and doesn't reduce your bank account. Simply pledge to do something on it when it's presented back to you. Whether it's babysitting for a friend, breakfast in bed, cook them a feast, or give them a foot or other massage. Imagination's the limit. Five Amazon shopping tricks The giant e-tailer has different sub-sites, let's call them basement levels, which can ramp down the price if you know to look there... 6. Amazon Resale 50%+ discounts on often as-new returned goods (use our tool to help). This part of Amazon's site sells returned or slightly-damaged (sometimes just damage to the box) items - such as laptops, kitchen appliances and tablets - at knockdown prices. It can prove tricky to spot the best bargains in this treasure trove of deals - so we built the Amazon Resale Discount Finder tool to make it less taxing (like Amazon). Many have used the tool and saved big, such as Susan on Facebook, who told us: "I bought a coffee machine for less than half-price. The box was bashed but the machine itself looked brand new. Bargain!" Of course, always compare prices elsewhere before buying. Our Amazon Resale guide has full info and help. 7. Amazon Renewed: Used, previous-generation tech with a one-year warranty. Amazon Renewed* is all about preowned slightly older tech products that have been tested, refurbished and look like new, such as previous generations from Apple, Samsung and Dell. It's best for laptops, headphones, games consoles, smartwatches, cameras and phone handsets (though for that, use our Refurbed Phone Finder for a wider range). Savings aren't always huge, though, so double-check. 8. Amazon Outlet: Odds and ends, but worth a check for 15% to 70% off new overstocked items. The clearance Amazon Outlet* has 100s of brand-new excess stock which Amazon (or third-party sellers) are keen to shift, though it's hit and miss. Think of it as like any store's end-of-sales clearance - it's a mix of funk, junk and a few things you may put in your trunk. We found a Squishmallows fox for £10 (from £18). Check prices though - not everything's discounted. 9. Is 12% off a good deal? Check past Amazon prices with CamelCamelCamel. Amazon can play fast and loose with what a discount actually is. Is it off the recommended retail price, the normal selling price... or something else? And, if you don't know what the discount's off, is it actually a good deal? To find out, use CamelCamelCamel's price history tracking tool. For example, an Amazon Fire HD 8 tablet was "55% off" at £45 - but the tool tells us it was £40 two weeks ago. 10. Spending £30 to £35 and not got Amazon Prime? Usually Amazon charges for delivery on orders less than £35. If you're just below it, it can be cheaper to add a small extra item than pay for delivery. The Amazon free delivery tool finds suitable extras for you. 11. TIMING MATTERS II: Last ordeeerrrsss - go quick for cheapest delivery. It's almost time for the last dates to get pre-Christmas delivery without an added fee. TOMORROW (Wed) is the last standard order date for retailers such as Currys, JD and Asda George. After that, if you want things delivered in time, expect to pay more. Shopping for a big expensive item? Use a shopping comparison site. You can do it for small ones too, though it's more important the more expensive is, as a percent or two price difference can be real money. We like PriceSpy and PriceRunner, though there's also the ubiquitous Google Shopping. 13. How to slash the cost of buying a new mobile phone. Our Cheap Mobile Finder tool allows you to find the cheapest deals from over 60 retailers and resellers. Plus, why buy new? Our Refurb Finder can find cheaper handsets including a year's warranty.  14. Consumer self-defence: pay at least 1p on a credit card if you're buying something costing over £100. Buy goods costing from £100.01 (and under £30,000), and even if you pay just 1p on a credit card - the rest any other way - the card company's jointly liable with the retailer for the WHOLE amount. It's the veritable financial superhero, especially if a firm then goes bust. Read last week's briefing on Section 75 protection. PS: Spending £100 or less, or on a debit card? You can claim for faulty or undelivered goods under the less well-known chargeback scheme. 15. Give charity gifts this Christmas. Why not agree to give to good causes in someone (or perhaps everyone) else's name? From vaccines to beehives, our charity gifts guide is packed with suggestions. These are just a couple of them to give you an idea... 16. Haggle big discounts online. While buying online is usually cheaper, the one advantage of buying in store is you may be able to haggle. Yet there may be a way around this - if you get a window offering a live chat (as opposed to an automated chatbot), don't dismiss it. See how to haggle with online chats.  17. Can't find a discount code? Try department store codes. Don't just check the site you want to buy from for a discount code - online stores that sell a range of brands often have a workaround. For example, La Redoute stocks Adidas, Converse, Levi's and more, and has up to 40% off selected items plus free delivery using the code 'FREEDEL' until 11.59pm tomorrow (Wed). Hunt out online outlet stores. Lots of big names, such as Asos, Ninja and even Tesco, offer substantial discounts on unsold lines through online outlets. Our Outlets deals page lists over 20, for huge clothing, homeware and other discounts. 19. Buy through cashback sites & apps. Check if you can make merry by buying via a top cashback site and getting money back. Plus the easy, free Airtime app tracks your spending at 200+ retailers and pays 1% to 15% cashback, which you can redeem as credit on your mobile bill (for O2, EE, Vodafone, Three and more). You can use both these together, and with a cashback credit card (see point 2 above) 20. How to buy second-hand in a first-class way. Grab goods for a fraction of the original recommended retail price - and it's planet-friendly. Though you're cutting it fine for delivery by Christmas now, so if possible pick up in person or liaise with the seller about quick postage. If I think of something they will like, I look there first and only if I can't find one in good condition will I buy it new. They are young and don't care if it comes in the packaging or not." 21. Get cash to help pay for NHS and private medical costs Little-known cashback plans give you money back when you pay for physio, eye tests, contacts, dentists and more Do you shell out for dental, optical, physio, podiatrists, chiropractors, osteopaths, etc? If so, healthcare cash plans are the hugely underpublicised, cheaper cousin of Private Health Insurance - but far from the poor relation. You pay a small amount each month, and then when you pay for NHS or private treatments, you claim back some or all of the cost (up to annual limits - the more you pay, the bigger the limit). We covered Cheap Private Medical Insurance in full in a recent email. This is medical insurance to bypass the NHS and cover the costs of private consultations, treatments and operations. Plus, can you get a £370 Apple Watch Series 11 for £9? 1. Why you should consider a cash plan if you or your family wear contacts/glasses and get annual dental check-ups. With the top policies, if you'll max the cashback on just these two categories, you get back more than the policy costs, so anything else is a bonus.  The type of things you can claim on healthcare cash plans include: - Therapies: Physio, chiropody, osteopathy, acupuncture - Consultants & tests: Specialists, scans (PET, CT, MRI) - Hospital Stay Payments - Maternity/Paternity Payments - Prescription Charges (some providers) - Health Screening So, tot up how much you currently spend on routine appointments, and calculate what you'd get back as a rough valuation of whether it'll be worth it. 2. The top healthcare cash plans. There are no comparison sites that we know of, so to try and help, we've calculated which plans give the highest potential payout compared to cost. We think that gives a decent (albeit imperfect) model of the best policies, yet it'll always depend on what you actually claim. See the top four healthcare cash plan policies for... INDIVIDUALS | INDIVIDUALS OVER 65 | COUPLES | FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN If you're an employee, it's also worth checking with your employer if it offers a work-based policy. These can be extremely good value as bulk-buying power means firms can negotiate big discounts. Though as always, check the terms in detail before signing up. 3. DON'T bother if you're the type of person who WON'T remember to claim. Apathetic or disorganised customers - who pay but never fill in the claim form and send receipts after treatments - are what keep plan providers' coffers healthy. Yet if you are an organised type of person who always claims, you can turn the odds in your favour. 4. Most don't require a medical, and pre-existing conditions may be covered. Some usually exclude claims based on pre-existing conditions, but others, including top picks Sovereign Healthcare and UK Healthcare, won't exclude ongoing dental and optical issues (though may exclude other pre-existing conditions for a period of time). Even if pre-existing conditions are excluded, most usually play fair, so if you've had a shoulder injury, this wouldn't usually stop you from claiming physio treatment if you get a bad knee. 5. Most firms have a 'qualifying period', so you can't usually claim for treatment in the first few months (10 months for childbirth claims). This means you can't claim anything in that time. It's done to stop people joining for specific known conditions and then cancelling. PS: All the Healthcare cash plans we mention are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (double-check first if you're going elsewhere), so you can complain to the Financial Ombudsman if you feel a claim's been treated unfairly, though we don't often hear of that happening.

Are subscriptions moved when you switch? Direct Debits and standing orders are moved for you. Yet the third category of regular payments, known as recurring payments - where you give the long number on your debit card when you pay - aren't moved; you need to do this yourself, eg, for Netflix, Disney+ etc. If you do forget, though, normally they'll notify you that 'your payment card no longer works' so it shouldn't be too big an issue. See recurring payment help. Can switching bank affect your ability to get credit? In the short term, yes. It's a credit application, so that has an impact by itself, but also lenders like to see evidence of stability. It usually isn't a big deal, but if you've an important credit application soon (eg, a mortgage), it's probably best to hold off until after. MONEY MORAL DILEMMA My employer keeps overpaying me and isn't taking the money back - what should I do? My employer's been overpaying me by a large amount every month.
