Martin: Do you PAY for CHILDCARE? Help is available Whether it's just for the coming summer, or year-round, MILLIONS miss out on £1,000s of help The school summer holidays add a time & money burden on many parents, yet millions are unaware of potential help to cover the cost. So if you shell out money year-round, or will do just for the summer, I want to highlight the available schemes. There's more detailed info in our Childcare costs guide, but start below as then you can speedily see if help's likely for you. And please do share this with any parents you know who it may help. What counts as childcare? It can include holiday clubs and summer camps Whether it's nurseries, childminders, holiday or after-school clubs, or even summer camps, what matters for all the help below is whether providers are...  In Eng & Wales: Ofsted registered, which includes the Early Years Register & the Childcare Register. In Scot: Care Inspectorate registered.  In N. Ireland: Registered with the local Health & Social Care Trust. For all of them, see how to check if a provider's registered. Though with Tax-Free Childcare, it is also worth double-checking they will accept payment via it (the vast majority do, but check just in case). Option 1: A FREE £2,000/yr is available via the 'Working Family Childcare Top-up' scheme  You won't have heard of this, because this isn't its real name, just what I think it should be (& am campaigning for it to be) called. It's formally titled the 'Tax-Free Childcare' scheme, which is totally misleading as it has nowt to do with tax. Our research shows this confusion is one reason why 825,000 of the possibly 1.3m eligible families don't claim it. And they should. As Kiran emailed: "I'd no idea about Tax-Free Childcare until I got your email highlighting that I could pay for my after-school care via it. Thanks to Martin and his team, I now save around £100/mth. I am so grateful. Thank you." Here's how it works... For every 80p you pay, the state tops it up with 20p. Those eligible can just set up the 'Tax-Free Childcare' account online (see full info in how to get Tax-Free Childcare) and pay money in to use for childcare. The state then tops this up, up to a max of £500 'free' every three months (£1,000 for some with children with disabilities), so a total of £2,000 a year. This works even if you're just paying out for childcare via, say, a summer school or after-school classes. To qualify, you (and your partner if you live with them) MUST... a) ... be paying for childcare for a child aged 11 or younger (or max 16 if they have a disability). b) ... earn at least the equivalent of 16hrs/wk Minimum Wage. (This is roughly earning £10,000/yr for over-20s, less for those younger or on apprenticeships.) c) ... not individually earn (nor can your partner) over £100,000 per tax year after pension contributions. (And yes, this is poorly structured & unfair on single-earner or dominant-earner families - similar to Child Benefit. We've long campaigned to make both fairer.) d) ... not be on Universal Credit. (If so, claiming this stops your Universal Credit, and the scheme below's better for you anyway.) Must-listen if you have children under 11 or plan to have them... What's happening to childcare? Bridget Phillipson, Education Sec of State A month ago, I put your childcare questions & problems to Sec of State Bridget Phillipson (and answered a few myself) on my podcast, including... are there enough funds for 30hrs/wk funded childcare? Why 800,000 families miss out on Tax-Free Childcare? Child Benefit cliff-edge problems & more. Listen for free on BBC Sounds | Apple Podcasts | Spotify or wherever you get pods from. Option 2: On Universal Credit (or should be), in work, and PAY for childcare for under-17s? If so, you may be able to get help, and if you can, as it trumps the Tax-Free Childcare system above and you can't have both, go for this. Claim up to £1,768/mth of childcare costs (even costs just for summer). If you are on Universal Credit (UC) and in any amount of paid work (or will start within a month), then you're eligible for help. There are no minimum hours or earnings, but it can't be volunteering / expenses only. (You're also eligible if you're on Statutory... Sick Pay, Maternity or Paternity or Shared Parental or Adoption or Neonatal Care Pay, or Maternity Allowance.) If so and you pay for childcare, you can now get up to 85% of childcare costs back - up to a maximum £1,031/mth if you've one child, or £1,768/mth if you've two or more - though it is usually paid in arrears (ie, you shell out then get the money back). Full info in claiming childcare costs through UC. Not on Universal Credit, but pay for childcare, work and have household income under c. £40,000/yr - you may be due it! If you're saying "that's me", I need to be clear - I'm not saying you are entitled to UC, just that it is definitely worth trying our free 10-min benefits calc to check just in case. In fact, if you're a single parent or pay high rent or have a child with a disability, you may want to check even with household income of up to £55,000/yr. Child aged 4 to 16 who qualifies for free school meals? Check for summer help (Eng or Scot) We go through this in detail in our summer holiday help if on free school meals info, but to sum up so you can see if that's worth reading... England: If your child qualifies for free school meals, you'll also get access to the Holiday Activities and Food Programme (HAF), which provides four weeks of activities, as well as one free meal a day. Scotland: If you earn under £796/mth, you'll get £2.50+ per day per child towards the cost of meals over the holidays. (If your child is in Primary 1 to 5, you'll need apply for income-related free school meals to get it.) Child aged 9mths to 4yrs? Check if you can get 'FREE' childcare hours each week My main focus today was highlighting that even if you only pay for summer childcare, help may be available. Yet for those with younger children, let me end by talking about the 'funded childcare' hours schemes (often colloquially called free childcare hours), where the state funds childcare. I'm going to start with England as that's where there are big changes due... The weekly hours you get depend on your child's age, yet it's only 38 weeks a year's worth, term time if you like. (I know, it makes no sense - I asked the Sec of State why.) However, you can think of it as a total annual amount of funded hours and spread it across the year (if the childcare provider allows it). If you pay for extra hours, both Tax-Free Childcare and Universal Credit help is usable for those. In England, many changes are coming in September Now From Sept 2025 9- to 23-mths-old Working parents 15hrs/wk (570hrs/yr) Non-working parents none Working parents 30hrs/wk (1,040hrs/yr) Non-working parents none 2-yr-olds Working parents 15hr/wk (570hrs/yr) Non-working parents 15hrs/wk if on certain benefits Working parents 30hrs/wk (1,040hrs/yr) Non-working parents 15hrs/wk if on certain benefits 3- and 4-yr-olds Working parents 30hrs/wk (1,040hrs/yr) Everyone else 15hrs/wk (570hrs/yr) Working parents 30hrs/wk (1,040hrs/yr) Everyone else 15hrs/wk (570hrs/yr) A 'working parent' is someone who earns (& their partner does too) at least the equivalent of 16hrs/wk Minimum Wage (roughly £10,000/yr for over-20s, less if younger or on apprenticeships), but not over £100,000/yr after pension contributions. Yet there are many discussions over whether there are enough places to deliver this and whether childcare providers are being paid enough (more on both in my podcast with the Education Secretary). In the rest of the UK. Things aren't changing to the same extent, but help is available - our how to get funded childcare guide takes you through it. In brief... Wales. Working parents of 3- and 4-year-olds are entitled to up to 30 hours a week of funded childcare, across 48 weeks of the year. At least 10 hours a week need to be used on early education and 20 hours on general childcare. Some areas are also phasing in 'flying start' schemes for 2- to 3-year-olds. Scotland. All 3- and 4-year-olds are entitled to 1,140 hours a year, though provision varies by local authority. There may also be help for 2-year-olds if you receive a qualifying benefit. N. Ireland. All 3- and 4-year-olds get 12.5 hours a week of childcare via the free Pre-School Education Programme during term time, either on a full-time or part-time basis. To get it, go to the Education Authority's website to get an application form.

New. Cheapest loan rates slashed! Eg, the cheapest loans under £5,000 were 10% last week, now are 7% It takes a while after UK base rates are cut for that to filter into the personal loan market, but now it's happened, and with aplomb. Almost across the board, the last fortnight's seen new cheaper loans launch, and today that's accelerated, with People's Choice massively undercutting all other providers, especially for amounts under £5,000. It's done this before... offering super-cheap rates on smaller loans, but then withdrawing them after a week. So for those who need to borrow, and want the security of fixed repayments, applying sooner is likely safer. Detailed help in our Cheap loans guide, but here's the key info... ONLY borrow if it's NEEDED, budgeted for & affordable. Loans need careful thought. They are best for a deliberate, planned, budgeted-for one-off expenditure with lasting gain (eg, repairing a broken kitchen, not booking a holiday). Ask yourself whether you really need it. If not, don't do it. If unsure, don't do it. If it is right for you, then do a budget to ensure you can afford the repayments, and aim to repay as quickly as you can, as that cuts costs. - Doing it to consolidate other debt, eg, credit card debt? See Martin's Is consolidation worth it? briefing. - Already struggling with debt? Ignore this - go straight to our Debt help guide. The UK's cheapest fixed-rate unsecured (a good thing) personal loans. Always go via our Must-Use: Loans Eligibility Calculator (all links below go via it too) as it helps you home in on the lenders most likely to accept you, protecting your credit file by minimising applications. The loans are all unsecured, which means unlike secured loans, they can't automatically look to take away your house if you don't repay (secured means security for the lender, not for you). Here are the best buys by loan amount... £1,000 - £2,999: New. People's Choice 7.1%, Zopa (via John Lewis) 9.9%, but 0% credit card loans may be cheaper. £3,000 - £4,999: New. People's Choice 7.1%, Novuna 9.9% (9.7% on £4,000 to £4,999). £5,000 - £7,499: New. People's Choice 7% (6.5% on £7,000 to £7,499). New. Tesco Bank 7% (need free Clubcard). £7,500 - £25,000: New. People's Choice 5.8%. New. M&S Bank, TSB 5.9% (both up to £20,000). - A word on People's Choice. It's the loans arm of insurer Hastings Direct, and with rates so much lower than the competition, it's unlikely these will be around for long. We also think it is likely to be credit-scoring tightly (ie, accepting a select few), but the link goes via the eligibility calc, so at least you'll see if you've a chance. - All these loans are 'representative APR', meaning sadly only 51% of accepted applicants need to be given the advertised rates (others accepted can be charged more, without limit). However, a few lenders now offer guaranteed rates via the eligibility calc, meaning you'll know the specific rate you'd get before application - you'll see these in your results. PS: While generally you should minimise borrowing, if you're borrowing just below a threshold where rates get cheaper (eg, £7,499 is 6.5% and £7,500 is 5.8%), it can actually mean you repay less if you borrow a little more. See loan rate loophole for how to work it out. How lenders decide who to lend to... As with all lending, when you apply you'll be credit-scored to see if you've been a good credit citizen. Each lender scores you differently based on its own wish list of what is a profitable customer. Yet less known is that lenders also do an affordability score (using your income from your application form, so do include every penny - but don't lie) to see whether you can actually afford to repay. And with loans, affordability is far more important than with, say, credit cards because you're applying for a specific amount, eg, the same lender may accept you for a £3,000 loan but reject you at £10,000. MSE's free Credit Club (available via the MSE App on Apple and Android) shows your credit and affordability scores and helps diagnose any issues. Plus, a version of our eligibility calc is within the Club (so, once registered, you needn't enter more details each time). Can you cut the cost of EXISTING loans? With rates lowering, it's worth checking to see whether you could cut your loan's cost, especially if you previously had a poorer credit score than you do now. The start point is to find a loan with a cheaper APR than you've got. If you can do that, it's important to do further key checks as there can be early repayment penalties. 'I found a £40,000 pension' & 'I found an £11,000 work pension' Reclaim lost pensions for FREE - are you entitled to a share of a forgotten £70 BILLION? There can't be many more (potentially) profitable uses of time than to spend a bit of it checking whether you've any lost pensions - especially for those who worked for lots of different firms over many years. More than three million pensions are thought to have gone astray, worth an average of £9,500 each (though some can be far bigger). There's full info on how to check whether any of this cash is yours in Find lost pensions, but all the basics are below. As Vikki (pictured right) emailed Martin: "Love your website and TikTok and often use your tips. I decided to trace my pensions and they have come back to say they have found one from the 1990s which I only paid a very small amount into for around five years as I recall. This pension is going to pay me around £160 per month for the rest of my life - if I manage to get to even 75, that's a lot of money!" [We estimate this could be worth nearly £40,000 if she does.] Please let us know if you find a pension using the info below (and how you did it). How do you lose a pension? It's not like it can drop out of your pocket. There are some very common causes. The biggies are... a) You've moved house without updating your details with your pension provider. b) You've changed jobs (especially if you've done it a lot) - as workplace pensions are often with different providers. c) Your pension provider has merged or rebranded, as this can make it difficult to know which firm you need to contact. And more importantly... how do you find it again? Whatever type your pension is, whether private, State Earnings Related Pension Scheme (SERPS), final salary, money purchase or anything else... thankfully, the steps to find it are the same. Step 1. If possible, make a list of all your former employers & pension schemes so you know how many you're looking for. You should have details on pension statements, but if you can't find these, try contacting the HR department at old employers to see whether they can help find details of previous workplace pension schemes you might have been part of. If you can't remember any of this, don't give up (jump to step 4). Charlotte found a lost pension: "Hi Martin. I'm new to your programme and newsletter, but just wanted to say thank you so much because after your programme on pensions, I found an old work pension... worth £11,000!" Step 2. Use the Pension Tracing Service. If you can't find any paperwork or can't get hold of an old employer, try the simple, free Gov.uk Pension Tracing Service tool. You can search by employer name, and it has details of over 200,000 different schemes. It will give you the contact details for the pension provider (usually an address and/or phone number), though it won't tell you if you've a pension there. Step 3. Once you've got the details from the Pension Tracing Service, contact the pension firm. It's then up to you to contact that company yourself. Many will have an email address or contact form on their websites, as you certainly won't be the only one in this situation. The ID you'll need to prove that you are you varies by firm, but it'll commonly be your National Insurance number, and possibly your passport or driving licence. The firm should then marry you up with your pension, if it holds one for you. Step 4. No luck or can't remember details? Gretel works a different way, and it's also free. While the Pension Tracing Service has a huge database, you need to remember the names of your past workplaces or of private pension plan providers. If you can't, fintech firm Gretel will do a 'soft search' on your credit report (this doesn't impact your 'credit score') to check your identity and match you with prior addresses where you may have accounts registered (so you needn't remember them to do this, though if you remember any that don't appear on your credit report, that'll help too). It'll try to track down any dormant pensions (and investments, bank accounts, shares, life insurance and Child Trust Funds) for you. It's free because the financial firms pay it (as they've a duty to try and find you, and this fulfils that, likely more cheaply than doing it themselves). Fewer financial institutions are signed up to it than the Pension Tracing Service, but once you register, it will redo your search every two weeks, so if a new firm joins it and there's a new hit, it'll let you know.   Find deceased relatives' lost pensions too. If a family member has died and you're responsible for their estate, or you're the beneficiary, you may be able to reclaim any pensions that person had lost (though you'll need the will as proof that anything found is due to you).
