1. Is your passport valid? Watch for the '10-year rule'. Check your travel party's passports to make sure both that...

They have at least 6mths left on them (3mths for EU) on the day you leave.
They'll be less than 10 years old on the day you enter the country.

If you fail either of those, see our passport rules & renewals guide to check the rules for the country you're travelling to and what to do, or else you may be sent back as you try to fly (or worse, in the airport on arrival).

2. Still time to grab the cheapest way to spend abroad. Spend on a specialist overseas card, and you get the same near-perfect exchange rates in every country that the bank does. And with our top-pick cards you also get cashback in the UK & overseas - meaning, in effect, you get better than the perfect exchange rate.

Top easy overseas debit card: Open Chase* (you needn't switch bank to do so, and there's no hard credit-check) and it gives 1% spending cashback up to £15/mth. Even if you're going tomorrow (or are already there) you can do this, as you can load the virtual card into Apple or Google Pay immediately.

Top overseas credit card: Barclaycard Rewards pays accepted cardholders 0.25% cashback, but as it's a credit card ensure you'll repay IN FULL each month or its 28.9% rep APR interest dwarfs the currency gain. The advantage here is Section 75 protection - if you buy items overseas costing £100+, it's valuable extra consumer protection if they go wrong or need returning.

3. Need a card for under-18s to spend on abroad? It's a whole different selection of mainly prepaid cards. See Top cards for under-18s to spend on abroad.

4. Going to Europe? Don't forget to pack a valid EHIC/GHIC for all the family. These cards give access to state-run hospitals or GPs in EU countries for the same price as a local - so if they don't pay, you don't pay. Yet 4.3m EHICs become invalid this year, so check yours. If it's set to expire, see how to safely get a free GHIC (same card, new name). If it's too late and you're already overseas, you can apply for a Provisional Replacement Certificate.

5. Try the 'rebook trick'... check if your hotel / car hire is cheaper than when you booked. Keep your eyes on cheap hotel comparison sites and cheap car hire comparisons to see if what you booked is now cheaper. If so - and your booking allows free (or cheap) cancellation - rebook for less, then cancel. See rebook hotels trick and rebook car hire trick for help.

As Ian emailed us at the end of last month: "I saved nearly £1,000 by cancelling my existing booking (it cost me £100 to cancel) and rebooking on a 4-week holiday to Disney in Florida. Same company, same car! Originally paid in September and rebooked last night. Thank you so much... cannot believe how this can actually happen."

6. Bookmark key pages on your phone in case of flight cancellation or delay. You often have a right to £200+ per person compensation. Bookmark our flight delay & flight cancellation rights guides, so you can read them if it happens - many read them on the plane after their landing is delayed. Plus, you could be eligible to make a retrospective claim for a delay/cancellation in the last five or six years in light of a new court ruling...

Martin: Booked but not got travel cover yet? DO IT NOW, DON'T DELAY - do it by the end of this box

I've been yelling 'get travel insurance ASAB' (as soon as you book) for years. Yet still too many leave it till the last minute. That's a mistake - half the cover's value is protecting you BEFORE you go, in case something stops you going.

Every year, a few people contact me after something awful, like a cancer diagnosis that needs chemo, but the airline or hotel won't refund them (they don't have to). I tell them 'that's what insurance is for, speak to your insurer'. But if they haven't got it yet, we're stymied.

So if you're reading this, have booked, and not got insurance, DO IT NOW. 7. Need travel cash? Find your cheapest bureau de change in seconds. Our travel money comparison tool compares 15+ bureaux for best rates.

8. Booked car hire? Be prepared for the hard sell on insurance at pick-up - prep now to beat it. If you've booked cheap car hire, it usually includes basic insurance. Yet at the pick-up desk, they almost always try to push 'excess cover' costing up to £25/day so you won't have to pay the excess. You'll hear scare stories of huge bills for just a scratch, and some even try and make you think it's mandatory.

Instead, get cheap standalone 'excess' insurance in advance for £2/day. Yet even with it, they'll try to put you off, tell you it doesn't work, or try to make you jump through hoops, so be prepared to...

- Leave a refundable deposit of possibly £1,000+ on a credit card.
- Often debit cards aren't accepted.
- It usually needs to be in the name of the person who booked (though some are the main driver). If not, they won't accept it, so check first.

9. Where tinkling in the sea, wearing flip-flops and more can get you a holiday fine. Know your foreign laws before you go - see our holiday habits warning.

10. Book airport parking ahead - even if it's on the day. Pull up to Stansted Airport without booking, and you'll pay from £315/wk to park. Book ahead, EVEN ON THE SAME DAY, using a comparison site, and it could cost you as little as £89/wk - though generally, booking earlier (and flexibly) is best.

11. When using plastic abroad, don't let them do the conversion, always pay in the local currency. See Martin's pay in euros? blog - it may be a bit dated, but the logic's still right.

12. Don't get stung with hidden roaming charges. Several major networks now charge £2ish/day to use your phone & data package in the EU, so don't get caught out - see full firm-by-firm EU roaming info. Better still, find yourself a cheap Sim from £4/mth for use here and in the EU.

13. Paying for summer childcare or clubs for under-11s (U16s with disabilities)? Money may be available. It's tough to work while the children are home - so many rely on clubs, camps and childcare. Yet few know the same support schemes (that work even for those earning up to £100,000) for year-round childcare also apply to those using it just in the summer - as long as it's a registered childcare provider - which many camps and clubs are. Full details in our Are you missing childcare help? note below.

14. Urgent. Does your child get free school meals? Apply for holiday support NOW. The Holiday Activity & Food Programme (HAF) in England gives children aged 4+ at least one meal a day (+ free activities) for at least six weeks a year during the main school holidays. Access to the programme isn't automatic, so apply to the HAF now. It's run by councils, so exact details depend on where you live. There are also schemes available in Scotland & Wales, though not Northern Ireland.

15. Grab a 'FREE' National Trust family day pass (normally £30ish) with 95p newspaper. See National Trust deal for full info, but you can pick up the pass in newspapers until Sunday 21 July.

FREE food, sports and more for kids this summer...

16. Feed children for free. Summer costs can be expensive, but there's a totally free bowl of cereal for all adults and kids at Morrisons cafés, and a way to get a free kids meal at Tesco via a 60p purchase with a Clubcard. The other kids eat free deals involve an adult buying a meal.

17. Free crafting, gardening, hamster care and other workshops. Big retailers such as John Lewis and Pets at Home are offering in-store workshops for kids over the summer hols - but places are limited so it's best to book early.

18. Free kids' sports and fitness sessions, including football, tennis, swimming & more. There are two football taster coaching sessions, a big tennis coaching weekend, weekly Zumba and yoga for teens, runs, swimming, netball and more, covered in our free kids' sport & fitness.

19. Take a child to a West End show for 'free'. When a grown-up pays, a kid aged 17 or under goes free to 50+ shows, including Wicked, Mrs Doubtfire, and Shrek. See Kids Week theatre deal.

20. How to find cheap UK hotels. Our full 22 cheap UK hotel tips guide takes you through it, but here are a couple of our faves...

- Secret hotel sites: Where they only tell you a star level and a rough location until you pay, but there are sneaky ways to uncover its real identify before.
- Stay in university digs outside term time for a surprisingly cost-effective way of staying very centrally - especially good for Oxford & Cambridge.
- How to find top self-catered deals: Our cheap rentals guide includes tips to find five-star accommodation at two-star prices. It's tougher in the school holidays, but we found a three-bed cottage in Devon for £678/wk in late Aug, compared with £1,710/wk for three rooms in a nearby swish hotel.

21. Don't forget your railcard, plus get 34% off a new one. If you're travelling across the UK by train, especially on a long journey, the cost of the railcard is likely to be easily covered by the saving on just that journey - especially as we've a way to get 34% off a digital railcard. 22. Cheaper entry to theme parks. There are no 2for1s available this year, so Tesco vouchers are the primary route to savings - see our discounted theme park tickets info for more.

23. Cheap UK holiday park stays if you start collecting The Sun tokens by Sunday. Its famous '£9.50' holidays deal is back for stays up to June 2025, and while our The Sun holidays analysis suggests they aren't really as cheap as £9.50, decent savings are still possible.

24. £2.50-ish kids' AND grown-ups' cinema tickets. Cinemas put on special family-friendly screenings over the school hols at Cineworld, Odeon and Vue. It's not usually the newest films, but includes recent releases, eg, Kung Fu Panda 4. See our 20+ cinema savers.

25. Hostels are usually dirt cheap, not dirty, eg, stay in a country manor from £25/night. Hostels aren't just for gap-year students in far-flung destinations. There are loads across the UK and they don't have age restrictions (though some aren't suitable for young kids).

Don't automatically think bunk bed in a shared dorm either - many offer singles, twins and doubles. Some even throw in free Wi-Fi and breakfast. For example, YHA Wasdale Hall is a 19th century manor in Cumbria with gorgeous views and it costs from £25 a night per person. See MoneySavers' top UK hostel picks.

Do you pay for childcare? Whether year-round or just in summer, MILLIONS are missing out on £1,000s/yr of help

The school summer holidays can add an extra burden on many parents, yet millions may be unaware of the help that's available, both for summer and across the year. Unless you earn over £100,000 a year, don't assume you can't get help. Our Childcare costs guide has full info, but here are the three most important things to check...

Step 1. Before you pay for ANY childcare, check if you can get 'FREE' childcare hours each week. If your child is nine months to four years old in England (or three or four years old in the rest of the UK), you can get up to 30 hours of what's often called 'free' childcare a week - though more accurate would be to call it 'funded', as you may need to pay a top-up depending on the cost of the childcare. Step 2. On Universal Credit (or should be) and PAY for childcare? Check if you can get help. If you pay for childcare, you may be able to get help via the benefits system. It's important you check this first before using the 'Tax-Free Childcare' system below, both as this is almost always better and, if you claim Tax-Free Childcare, it'll stop your benefits.

On Universal Credit (UC) and in work? Claim up to £1,739/mth of childcare costs (including if they're just for summer). The maximum childcare provision has been uprated this year, to 85% of childcare costs up to £1,014/mth (for 1 child) or £1,739/mth (for 2+ children). See claiming childcare costs through UC.
Earn under £40k-ish (or possibly more) and not claiming UC? Check NOW if you can get it. Martin's rule of thumb is if your household income's roughly under £40,000 (or £55,000 if you've a larger family & pay high rent), then it's worth plugging your info into our 10-min benefits calc to see if you're due owt (not saying you are, just it's worth checking). If you qualify, you'll get what's called the 'child element', worth around £288/mth per child (for your first two children), plus your standard allowance. And, if in work, you may get further help towards childcare costs on top (see point a. above).
Still on Tax Credits? You can claim back up to 70% of childcare costs this way. Though some will be better off switching to UC as more childcare money's available that way. Be careful though, seek one-on-one advice before switching.

Childcare ISN'T just nurseries & childminders - it oft includes holiday clubs, summer camps etc

To count as childcare - for both benefits and Tax-Free Childcare - providers must be regulated in Eng & Wales by Ofsted (which includes the Early Years Register & the Childcare Register), in Scotland by the Care Inspectorate, and in N Ireland by the local Health & Social Care Trust. Many school summer clubs, camps and tutors are, so it's worth asking them (and, if on Tax-Free Childcare, do check they accept it). See how to check if my provider's registered.

Step 3. Are you one of 800,000 homes missing out on the up to £2,000/yr Working Family Childcare Top-Up? Do remember if you claim UC or Tax Credits, don't do this, as opening it means ALL your benefits stop.

Now a quick note from Martin: "You won't have heard of the Working Family Childcare Top-Up scheme, because it's actually called Tax-Free Childcare - a terrible name that's nowt to do with tax, nor tax-free. It was christened the Tax-Free Childcare system to score political points - but the confusion that name causes is a big reason too few people understand and claim it. So we're campaigning for it to be renamed to something that actually helps, not hinders, understanding." In the meantime, here's how it works...

Tax-Free Childcare provides a top-up for working parents of children aged 11 or younger (16 or younger if they have a disability) who pay for childcare. To qualify, you (and your partner if you live with them) must usually:

- Be employed or self-employed.
- Earn a minimum of the equivalent of 16hrs a week's Minimum Wage (roughly £9,500/yr if aged 21+).
- Earn £100,000 or less (after pension contributions). The last Govt promised to consult on shifting this to a household, not individual, cut-off - we're waiting to see if that will continue.

If you're eligible, it's a no-brainer - just set up an online account for your childcare costs and, for every £8 you pay in, the state tops it up with £2, up to a max £500 every three months (£1,000 for some with disabilities). As Kiran emailed: "I had no idea about Tax-Free Childcare until I got your email highlighting that I could pay for my after-school care via it and save myself 20% off the fees. Thanks to Martin and his team, I now save around £100/mth. I am so grateful. Thank you."

Ends Sun at the latest. Free £200 just for switching bank. Last week, top service bank (91% 'great') First Direct* added a £25 Amazon voucher (via this link) to its free £175 cash for switchers' deal, but that ends on Sunday - or sooner if there's huge demand - so go ASAP (the link will show you if it's still on). News. Water bills to rise £100+ over the next five years
5 ways to cut your water bill (some can save £500+)...

Water regulator Ofwat's latest contentious proposals mean it'll allow water firms to increase bills by an average of around £100 across England and Wales over the next five years. It says this £88bn rise will lead to a record investment to "reduce pollution, improve customer service, river and bathing water quality" as well as to tackle climate change. Yet this was a third less than water firms wanted, and with Thames Water's solvency possibly teetering... water is in crisis.

So most bills will rise, yet there's a huge variance based on where you live, eg, Anglian customers will pay £66 more by 2030, whereas Southern Water customers will pay £183 more (see firm-by-firm water rises). Of course, perversely, with water there's privatisation but no competition, yet that doesn't mean you can't do anything. The BIG SAVING: Millions in Eng & Wales can save £100s switching to a FREE water meter? Water bills are based on the old pre-1990 rates system, where the amount paid is roughly based on your home's rental value, not usage. So bigger homes tend to pay more, even if they're using little water. In England and Wales you can get a free water meter, which measures how much you use and bills you accordingly. Here's Martin's simple rule of thumb...

... then there's a good chance you can save, so use a water meter calculator

For some, especially bigger houses with few people, the savings are large. Ursula emailed us: "I got a meter fitted as there are only two of us in a three-bed house. We now pay £16/mth, not £60/mth [so £530 a year less]. Thank you." If your water calc shows savings are likely, you can ask your firm for a more formal assessment if you want.

Can you switch back? If you voluntarily fit a meter, with most (though not all) firms you've up to two years to change your mind and go back without penalty (see firms' water meter switch-back policies).
Told you can't get a meter? In some ways that's the best route... Some with shared pipes or in flats are told by water firms they can't 'practicably' have a meter fitted. If so, ask for an 'assessed charge bill', which works out how much you'd likely pay if you had a meter. Then if that's cheaper than your normal water bill, switch to it. If not, don't.

Karen emailed us: "I moved into my house 4 years ago and was told I couldn't have a meter. Having recently read your advice, one easy call with SE Water resulted in my annual charge dropping to £200pa from £446pa. Thanks so much."
On Universal Credit, benefits or have a low household income? Check out social tariffs and WaterSure. Social tariffs are offered by all firms and can reduce what you pay by up to 90%. There are 5.7m ELIGIBLE HOUSEHOLDS MISSING OUT on an estimated £160/yr on average. See firm-by-firm social tariff help.

Separately, if you receive benefits AND either have 3+ children OR a medical condition such as Crohn's or eczema which means you need to use more water, you may be able to have bills capped under the WaterSure scheme.
Freebies to cut your water use (good even with no meter) - 100,000s available, including £20 shower heads. Water firms across most of the country hand out 100,000s of water freebies. They're especially MoneySaving if you've a meter, but even if you don't, as much of the water we use is heated, they can cut energy bills. Plus, see our 30 water-saving tips.
Can you get a sewerage rebate? It's generally assumed that used water creates a similar amount in sewage. Yet if you've a way of draining or storing water - such as a soakaway, cesspit, pool or big garden - that means some of the water you're using isn't going into a public sewer, you may be able to claim a rebate worth an average ~£35/yr.
