You don't need to switch to get 'em, but you do need to work out if you'll truly benefit from them.  1. TOP FOR ONGOING REWARDS: Santander Edge Key perks: 1% cashback on bills & supermarket shops MSE customer service poll rating: 55% 'great', 13% 'poor' The £3/mth Santander Edge* account gives a linked 4% easy-access saver you can put up to £4,000 in, fee-free overseas spending and cashback in two different categories, up to £20/mth in total. You get: - 1% cashback on bills paid by direct debit (water, council tax, energy, broadband, mobiles, home phones, paid-for TV). Max £10/mth.  - 1% cashback on supermarket shops, fuel, and train and bus travel paid for on your debit card. Max £10/mth. We estimate typical bills and spending would earn £60 to £100/yr after fees. Santander's minimum monthly pay-in is £500 and you must also have 2+ direct debits set up. TOP PAID-FOR BANK ACCOUNT: Virgin Money Club M Key perks: £500 insurance for £150/yr MSE customer service poll rating: 41% 'great', 26% 'poor' Packaged bank accounts are those where you pay a monthly fee, and lots of insurance products are thrown in, so they can be a great way to get £100s of needed insurance for a fraction of the usual cost.  Our top pick is Virgin Money's Club M account - it gives cover for all family phones and gadgets, worth £100s individually, plus worldwide family travel insurance until your 75th birthday and UK breakdown cover for the account holder. PS: These accounts are the Marmite of banking and many people were upsold or mis-sold unsuitable policies - if so, you may be able to reclaim £1,000s. BEST FOR OVERDRAFTS Use switch cash to cut debt or shift borrowing to 0% Overdrafts are danger debt, with interest rates typically a whopping 40%. You can switch when you're overdrawn, though there's no guarantee the new bank will match your existing overdraft - or even offer you an overdraft at all. However, all banks have overdraft eligibility checkers, so use these before applying to get an indication of whether you'll likely qualify. And if it goes well you can use the free cash to reduce what you owe, and cut the interest too. Full info in top overdraft accounts, but in brief... Owe less than £425? Get paid to switch to a 0% overdraft. First Direct* offers new switchers a free £175, and many get a £250 0% overdraft. So if your overdraft's up to £425, the £175 pays some off and the rest is interest-free. Above that you'll pay the 40%, like elsewhere. Full info in First Direct review. A year's potentially bigger 0% overdraft. Nationwide FlexDirect* can offer a far bigger 0% overdraft, though the limit depends on your credit history. Do a 0% money transfer. These are specialist credit cards you can use to clear your overdraft. Quite simply, you apply, then ask it to pay money into your bank account, so you owe it instead, at 0% interest for up to 14 months. You need to be careful though. Mortgage crisis help Base rate up AGAIN to 5.25% - with further rises likely. What to do if you're remortgaging, struggling to pay or on a cheap fix that's soon to get expensive... The Bank of England raised the base rate to 5.25% last week, with experts forecasting it'll peak at about 6% by early 2024 before gradually retreating. All of which means the cost of tracker and variable mortgages is still rising, while uncertainty lingers for the 2.4m who have fixed-term deals ending before the end of next year. Yet fixed rates have at least edged down slightly, plus new help's available if you're struggling to pay your current mortgage. Here's what you need to know: Deal ending within six months? Find the cheapest new mortgage NOW. Our free Remortgage PDF has full info on how it works, but in short... 1) Gather your current mortgage details. For example, what type is it; what rate are you on; how long is your term? 2) Check your existing lender's deals. Rates can be competitive and there's often less paperwork. Product transfer options. 3) Speedily compare to see if it's cheaper elsewhere. See what's available with our mortgage comparison tool. 4) Check what you'll be paying. Use our mortgage calculator. 5) Boost your acceptance chances. Check your credit file before lenders do, plus tips to boost your creditworthiness. 6) Should you fix, and if so, for how long? The more you value certainty, the more you should fix and fix longer. But fixing for 5/10yrs is cheaper than 2yrs - a sign markets think rates will fall long-term. It's a tough call, so you should... 7) Talk to a mortgage broker. They'll run you through your options and find lenders more likely to accept you, plus they've access to exclusive broker-only deals. New mortgage support available - what to do if you're struggling to pay your mortgage. Most big UK lenders have signed up to the new mortgage charter - if you've already reassessed your finances and still need help, check if your lender offers mortgage charter support. If you haven't already missed a payment, you can choose ONE of these two options and use it ONCE, without hurting your credit file. There's a lot to consider, so see our new mortgage charter support guide to help. But in brief: - Option 1: Switch to interest-only repayments. Likely wins if you need significant short-term help. It will last for six months, during which time your monthly repayments will be lower. - Option 2: Extend your mortgage term. Likely wins if you need a smaller amount of short-term help OR if you need longer-term help. This will lower your repayments, and while you can return to your original term if you want to, you can also keep the extended term if you wish. Neither option is to be taken lightly, as the better one for you will depend on how much each option cuts payments, whether you need short or long-term help, and how much it will add to your mortgage. Instead, speak to your lender about the tailored support it can offer you. On a cheap fix with 6mths+ left to run? Start prepping NOW. When your current deal ends, you'll likely be moving to a more expensive one (use our Compare two mortgages calc to see how much more a new deal at 6%-ish will cost). So... - Set a reminder for SIX MONTHS before your current fix ends. That's how far in advance most lenders let you apply for a new deal. So you can lock in today's rate now (often fee-free) and then ditch it if something better comes along. Normally this won't incur a penalty, unless you've paid fees upfront. See lock in early for more. - Save whatever you can NOW to reduce the future pain. As most on cheap fixes can earn more saving than their current mortgage rate costs, for now it's best to put cash in top savings instead of overpaying, ready to use towards your new mortgage when the fix ends. Pet insurance going cheep (and woof...)  Including hot deals comparison sites miss, such as £75 Amazon voucher More than half of UK households own a pet, and as if the food and treats didn't cost enough already, the price of pet insurance has been rising as claims are now more expensive, according to the Association of British Insurers. And as there's no NHS for pets - and with medical costs high (treatment for arthritis in a dog can cost over £2,000, and help for a cat with diabetes £1,000) - you could face tough decisions without cover. Our full Cheap pet insurance guide has a litter of tips to reduce costs, whatever pet you have, but here's a brief walkies through... OWN A CAT OR DOG? Combine comparison sites, then check hot deals they miss. Like most types of insurance, prices are bespoke, so the key is to get as many quotes as possible in the shortest time. Step 1. Combine comparison sites. Try as many as you've time for, as they search different insurers and sometimes have different prices for them, and most let you get multi-pet quotes. Try MoneySupermarket*, Compare The Market* (single pet quotes only), Gocompare and then Confused.com*. Step 2. Check deals that aren't on comparison sites. As well as big providers such as Direct Line and Petplan*, which don't appear on comparisons, some promos are missed too. We've included the top deals that comparisons don't list in our guide (some because we've blagged exclusive extras). So check them individually and compare them to the winners from comparison sites, factoring in the promos and the level of cover, to see which wins. These include the following (though we don't have huge feedback on all providers)... - Fluffy* - through this special link it offers a £75 Amazon voucher after 15 days of cover. - Ends Thu. Waggel* - via this link, get a £55 Amazon voucher per pet on the policy after 90 days. - John Lewis Finance* - gives a £50 John Lewis or Waitrose voucher via that link after 90 days. - Napo* - offers a £40 Amazon voucher through this link, with code MSESUMMERPROMO, paid within 75 days. - And if there's time, check cashback sites too to see if you can get cashback on the comparison's winner. HORSES, RABBITS, PARROTS, REPTILES AND OTHER PETS: Comparisons don't usually work. It's a little trickier, as you'll need to manually compare quotes directly with specialist insurers. - For horses and ponies: Try SEIB, Petplan Equine* and NFU Mutual. - For rabbits, budgies, guinea pigs, parrots, lizards and more: Try Exotic Direct* & British Pet Insurance (+ Sainsbury's & Petplan* for rabbits). BEWARE switching insurance if your pet has an existing condition. Most new policies won't cover past issues, whether you've claimed for them or not. Yet if you stay with your old insurer, you're likely to pay more to cover that condition in future. So it's usually a choice between switching to a cheaper policy with no cover for the specific condition, or sticking and likely paying more. Full help in existing problems. Top pet insurance NEED-TO-KNOWS... 1) It generally covers big issues (such as broken bones and cancer), not check-ups. See what's covered. 2) Need cover but can't afford it? If you're on certain benefits, charities such as the PDSA may help with vet bills. 3) Cats are seen as free spirits, dogs aren't. That means you're liable for your dog's behaviour if it causes damage or injury to other people or property. So always check third-party cover (as a minimum, get it standalone from Dogs Trust). 4) Could you self-insure? For smaller animals, you could put cash in savings to cover fees. See self-insuring help. 5) Don't forget routine jabs. If you don't keep up to date, it may invalidate your insurance. 6) Always check the policy is right for you. It's not easy, as insurance is about protection from the unknown, but do check the policy details, what's excluded, and that the firm's regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. 7) If your claim's unfairly rejected, take the firm to the Financial Ombudsman. Once you've complained to the firm, you've then a right to go to the free independent Financial Ombudsman Service for its help to settle the claim.

MONEY MORAL DILEMMA Should my partner contribute more to household bills as he works from home full-time? I work part-time from my workplace and look after our child one day a week to save on childcare costs. My partner works full-time from home, using two computers, cooking food and having the lights and heating on as required. He contributes more towards bills than I do, as I reduced my hours, and therefore pay, to care for our child, but I think he should contribute even more, as he uses much more energy, water and so on than I do.
