Booked a summer holiday abroad? Act NOW to cut the cost of leaving Martin's 18+ need-to-dos incl passport renewal, GHICs, cheapest currency card for years, insurance & more The cost of living crisis may now be firmly in play, but millions had already booked summer holidays earlier in the year. Around 60% of the 60,000+ who replied to my Twitter poll last week said they plan to leave UK shores and holiday abroad this year (or already have). So with the first big post-lockdown holiday season fast approaching, it's never been more important for your pocket to prepare. Here are my 18+ things to DO NOW to cut costs / hassles when you go... 1. Check if your passport will have under 6mths left OR be over 10yrs old when you go. Renewals can take MONTHS! Brexit means more countries now require UK passports to have months left on them, and be under 10 years old, to let you in. See our country-by-country rules list. If you need to renew, go quick, as the UK Passport Office is over-burdened and under-resourced. It says to allow 'up to 10 weeks' to get a passport, but I'm hearing it's taking even longer for some, and paying to 'fast-track' isn't an option for many as there are few appointments. To do it safely and avoid shyster lookalike sites, use our Passport renewal guide. 2. Is your hotel cheaper now than when you booked it? The rebook trick may save you £100s. If the price of your hotel has dropped and your booking allows free cancellation, simply rebook for less. Check latest prices on comparison sites Skyscanner*, Kayak* and TripAdvisor* - and keep checking before you go. Alison tweeted: "I saved £200 when the price dropped two days before travel." See Hotel tricks for full help. Get near-perfect rates on spending overseas and 1% cashback by sorting the right plastic Normally, spend in foreign currency on plastic, and while your card provider gets a near-perfect exchange rate, most add a 3%-ish 'non-sterling fee' on to what they charge us, so £100 worth of euros / dollars / colons costs you £103. Yet specialist travel cards don't add this - so you get the same near-perfect rates banks do, smashing bureaux de change, and as it works again and again, you only need to sort it once for many trips. The standout top pick today is, unusually, a debit card. Newish fee-free app-only Chase Bank* has that near-perfect exchange rate, lets you withdraw £700/month from ATMs fee-free, plus as it pays 1% cashback on most spending in the UK and abroad, it's unbeatable. You NEEDN'T switch banks to get it, just open and use it as a 2nd account (it also has a linked 1.5% savings on up to £250,000 too - by far the top easy-access rate). The top credit card for overseas. If you prefer a card you just pay off after spending, Barclaycard Rewards* (use our eligibility calc) is the top pick, again with near-perfect exchange rates, no ATM fee, crucially no interest on fully-repaid overseas ATM withdrawals, plus 0.25% cashback on all spending worldwide. Yet ONLY get it if you'll repay IN FULL each month, preferably by direct debit, or the 22.9% rep APR interest dwarves the currency gain. Full info & options in Top travel credit cards. PS: When using plastic abroad, if asked by a shop or ATM: 'Do you want to pay in pounds or euros?', see my old Pay in euros? blog - it may be a bit dated, but it's still right. 3. This summer is the first since 2016 where you can't roam-like-at-home when in EU countries. When we were leaving the EU, most firms said they had no plans to reintroduce roaming charges - well, that didn't last long. Of the four main networks, Vodafone and EE already have them, and Three's return at the end of May for those on contract. Only O2 still says it has no plans to do it (yet?). The charges are usually £1-£2 a day to get your home phone & data package abroad. For other providers, see our full who's bringing back EU roaming charges list, and the same link has info on how to cut costs. 4. Going to Europe? Check you've a valid GHIC (or EHIC) - 5.6m expire this year. These cards give you access to state-run hospitals or GPs in EU countries for the same price as a local - so if it's free for them, it's free for you. They're no substitute for travel insurance though, use them in combination. If you have an old school European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), check it's still valid. If not, most now need to apply for its post-Brexit replacement, the FREE Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC). 5. Find your cheapest bureau de change in seconds. While taking cash abroad isn't as cheap as using the right plastic, many like to have some with them, and others prefer it as a way of sticking to a budget. If that's you, don't just pluck any old bureau, there are big differences. Our travel money comparison tool compares 16. Booked a holiday and not got travel insurance yet... MISTAKE. You need travel insurance ASAB (As Soon As you... Book). If you've left it, sort it now Travel insurance isn't just to cover you for things that happen while on holiday. It's also for things that happen beforehand that stop you going. Already this year, as sadly happens every year, someone's told me they've got cancer and planned treatments mean they can't go on their booked summer holiday. Without travel insurance, barring hoping for goodwill, options are scarce. Airlines and hotels don't have to give refunds if you are ill (just like you breaking your arm doesn't mean you've a right to a refund on a tennis racket), that's what the insurance is for. Cheap travel insurance | Over-65s travel insurance | Pre-existing conditions travel insurance As for Covid issues, all the policies we list cover... ✔️ Cancellation if you can't travel as you've tested positive. ✔️ Caught Covid abroad and need to stay longer to isolate. Your cheapest depends on age and destination, so try a few. For no-frills under-66s bog-standard policies that meet our minimum cover criteria, try Leisure Guard*, Coverwise (Bronze)* and CoverForYou (Silver)*, which cost from £9/week for an individual and £47 for a family worldwide. If you'll go away twice a year or more, look for an annual policy that covers all trips from the same providers and Staysure (Comp)* too. If you want higher-end cover (it costs more) with better feedback, use our travel insurance finder for more options. If Covid protection is your main concern, there are more expensive policies which offer extra cover, such as if you... ✔️ Can't travel due to a change of FCDO travel advice, which could happen if new variants are found in other countries. ✔️ Can't travel due to overseas lockdown or travel restrictions. These can be treble the cost, so it's your call. They include M&S Bank, Churchill, Aviva's travel disruption add-on and Direct Line. Or switch to Nationwide's FlexPlus current account. It costs £13/month (£156/year), gives the same level of cover and can work out far cheaper - plus it gives mobile & breakdown insurance too. It's worth noting no mainstream policies we know of cover you if you choose not to go as you'd have to quarantine on return (not an issue right now) or you don't feel safe going. Do always check policy terms are right for you before buying, and if an insurer later unfairly rejects a claim, you can complain, and then - if not resolved - take the insurer to the free Financial Ombudsman. 6. Will you need a Covid test to travel? If so, where's it cheapest? Testing for UK arrivals has been scrapped, but many countries including the USA, New Zealand and Japan still require you to take one before they'll let you in. If you need a test, then check our Cheapest Covid travel tests guide. 7. Roaming outside the EU can be very costly - take precautions. If you're in the USA and watch 30 minutes of TV on a bad roaming deal, the bill could, in theory, be £3,000! By law though, thankfully data is capped at £45 unless you actively choose to keep spending (there's no similar law to cap calls and texts, so be extra careful, though you can set your own cap). If you go outside the EU a lot, then a specialist global roaming Sim may work for you. Plus use our tips for using less data overseas, such as turning your mobile into a free worldwide sat-nav. 8. Beat airlines' seat reservation charges and sit together for FREE on BA, Easyjet, Virgin and more. A family of four could pay up to £240 extra to guarantee they sit together on return flights. It's usually unnecessary - but it's all about knowing your timings and rights. We've help in our Airline-by-airline seating guide (though even we struggle to find ways to beat Ryanair's charges). In some cases this can be very important, as Forumite blaggy said: "We have a 27-year-old son who has learning difficulties and have always been seated together for free after phoning the special assistance team." 9. Book car hire EARLY to keep the price down. Reports say car hire prices have sky-rocketed since before the pandemic, so expect to pay more than before. Yet early booking is still the rule. We can find August car hire for around £35/day in various Spanish destinations, and our guess from previous patterns would be that if you leave it to much nearer the day, that could rise to as high as £80. Use our tips to save Set a budget first, check what you can afford, factoring in both the cost of travel, accommodation and spending money when there. Then use our guide to find a holiday within those limits...   Cheap flights | Cheap hotels | Cheap package holidays  10. Booked car hire? Be ready for the insurance forced-sell / hard-sell when you pick the car up. Car hire usually includes basic insurance, yet when you pick up a car, many hire firms will try to push you to get 'excess cover insurance' costing up to £25/day with scare stories of huge bills for just a scratch. Instead, standalone car hire 'excess' insurance can cost just £2/day. Yet be aware that even if you get it, they'll often grumble, try to put you off or tell you it doesn't work, and require you to leave a refundable deposit of possibly £1,000+ on a credit card (some don't accept debit) - not a problem, as long as you have one, just nod, say it's fine and do it. Forumite Thriftmeister told us: "The best £11 I spent for my holiday. I just got paid back the £878 for the excess I had to pay on my credit card resulting from a minor incident in France." 11. Want to park at the airport? Book ahead, even if on the day. Turn up at Manchester Airport's long-stay car park and it's £350/week, yet prebooked on the day, park & ride is just £58/week, though obviously for safety do it earlier if you can. Have you got an overseas debit card from hell? Not only do most debit cards add a 3%-ish load on the exchange rate, some including biggies Lloyds and TSB also add a 50p-£1.50 charge every time you spend on them, meaning a two-dollar coffee could cost you nearly double what a specialist overseas card charges. Use our card-by-card overseas charges calculator to see how much your credit and debit cards cost for spending abroad. 13. 'Onde é o banheiro, por favor?' Free apps to help you learn the lingo before you go. A little vocabulary can go a long way - say if you're caught short in Portugal. Download a free language app now. Plus when you're there, a free app can translate 59 languages offline. 14. Driving to Europe (or when you get there)? Check if you need emissions stickers, headlight converters and more. Different countries have different requirements, so if you're taking your own car (or hiring when you arrive), use our Driving in Europe guide to see what you need before you go, and what the rules are when you get there. 15. Avoid airport drop-off charges - now as high as £7 for five mins. Most UK airports have put in £5+ charges for those who want to be dropped off right outside the terminal. Yet if you don't want to pay, there are often workarounds, usually involving a longer walk or shuttle bus. See our airport-by-airport guide on how to Beat 'kiss and fly' charges. 16. Beware holiday scams on social media and search engines. This is rife right now. If you're looking at holidays, then you are likely to be targeted by scammers with ads for fake package holidays, hotels, flights and especially caravans. If you get an out-of-the-blue email or WhatsApp message offering deals, be very careful. Always do independent research, and if it isn't from a legit source and seems too good to be true, it probably is. See Avoid holiday scams. 17. Travelling outside the EU - do you need a visa? If heading Stateside, even in transit, you must get an ESTA at least 72 hours ahead - see our ESTA guide. Elsewhere (for instance, India), you may need a visa which can take weeks to arrive. See the Government's foreign travel advice for the full requirements. 18. Taking pets abroad (including in the EU)? You need an animal health certificate. It covers dogs, cats and ferrets, and needs to be signed by an 'official veterinarian'. You can get it up to 10 days before your trip. Best to know what's needed early - see taking pets abroad.

'I saved £600 a year and halved my APR by switching loan' Switching ain't just for bank accounts: with rates low (for now), if you're paying off a personal loan, it's worth checking to see if you can slash the cost If you're paying off a loan, don't think you've no options. Everyone with a loan, especially if it's costly, should check if you can get a new, cheaper loan to pay off the existing one. It can net big savings, as it did for Deborah who emailed us: "I tried your loan calculator. Pleased to say I halved my APR and saved £50/month with my new loan. Thanks." Yet as there can be repayment penalties, you need to be careful. Here's our step-by-step guide to do it right... Step 1: Get a 'settlement figure' from your lender. This is the amount you'd need to borrow from the new lender to pay off the existing loan today. It's the remaining debt plus any early settlement charge (max two months' interest). It may be listed online - if not, call up the lender and ask. Step 2: Find YOUR new top rate for that amount. Below we list the market's best buys BUT getting accepted for those rates isn't necessarily that easy, so use our Loans Eligibility Calculator, which does a 'soft search' (which doesn't affect your ability to get future credit) then shows which loans you're most likely to get. Plus we also have a few lenders with 'guaranteed rates', which may beat those below for some. The UK's cheapest personal loans (over 1-5 years unless stated) £7,500 - £15,000 eligibility calculator M&S Bank* (1-7yrs), Tesco Bank*,  Cahoot* and Santander* 2.8% representative APR. £5,000 - £7,499 eligibility calculator MBNA* and Novuna Personal Finance* (2-5yrs) 3.4% representative APR. £3,000 - £4,999 eligibility calculator AA* 8% (for members)/8.1% representative APR, Post Office*, Bank of Ireland* and Novuna Personal Finance* (2-5yrs) 8.1% representative APR. Under £3,000 eligibility calculator Novuna Personal Finance* (2-5yrs) 9.8% representative APR is cheapest if you want the fixed repayments of a loan. Though here a 0% money transfer credit card 'loan' (if you get the credit limit) can be far cheaper. For a 3-4% fee it pays cash into your bank, so you owe it instead, but at 0%. Do make sure you repay at the same level as you would a loan, and clear it within the 0% period. You'll notice all rates here are 'representative APR', which means only 51% of those accepted need to get 'em - others will usually pay more. Frustratingly, you're often only told the actual rate after applying. Even our eligibility calculator mostly has to work with representative APRs, though a few lenders now offer guaranteed rates. Step 3: The BIG reveal - use our loan switching calculator. Plug the old and new loan details into our nifty loan-switching calculator. If it shows you can save, apply, then if accepted at the right rate, use the new loan to pay off the old one. The lower monthly repayments will free up cash (which you could use to overpay and clear the loan quicker, if it's not needed elsewhere). Step 4: Follow the Loan Golden Rules. a) This is about switching loans. Don't be tempted to borrow more just because rates are low. b) Pay on time (best by direct debit) or you may be charged late fees and see missed payments on your credit file. Plus since last Thursday, new & existing account holders can open its linked 3.5% regular saver, and save up to £300/month. Water saving! Can you save £100s on the forgotten utility? Just because you can't switch supplier, it doesn't mean savings are impossible. Bronwyn cut costs by over £500 Water is often the forgotten utility, with money leaking out of accounts. Yet it is possible to flush out big savings. Our Cut water costs guide is overflowing with tips to help you plug the gaps in your knowledge, particularly important amid the cost of living crunch. Here are a few to dip your toes into (and yes, we enjoyed tapping this out)... In England & Wales? Can you save £100s switching to a water meter? Water bills are based on an old system, where the amount you pay is based on roughly your home's value, not your usage, so usually the bigger the place, the more you pay. That means big homes with few people in them are often overpaying massively. As water meters are free in England & Wales (not Scotland & NI), unless it's not practical to do so, Martin's rule of thumb is... If so, use a water meter calculator to see if you'll save For some, the savings can be massive, as Bronwyn found. She emailed: "Thanks to you I took the step to have a meter installed and my bill has gone from £65/month to £17/month." 750,000+ water freebies, including £20 shower heads, £5 tap inserts, £2.50 shower timers. Water firms are handing out over 750,000+ water freebies via water efficiency site Save Water Save Money - and right now there's more stock than ever before. These include shower heads, tap inserts, shower timers and garden hose nozzles. And as much of the water we use is heated, these can cut energy bills too. Can't practically have a meter fitted? If, for example, you live in flats with shared pipes, ask for an assessed charge which is based on likely usage. Don't worry if it isn't cheaper than your water bill, you can stick with that. Joyce emailed: "I rang Affinity Water. They assessed by looking at the number of bedrooms and occupants. I saved £70+. Thanks." Can you get a sewerage rebate? If your rain water drains into a soakaway in your garden rather going into the public sewer, you can claim a rebate for those charges, typically around £35/year.  Struggling to pay? If you're on a low income, have a medical condition or get certain benefits, you may be entitled to discounted or capped water bills.
