90 ways to survive the cost of living crisis On Friday a 54% rise in the energy price cap hit 22 million homes, a desperate, typical £700/yr increase - catastrophic for those with the lowest incomes. Yet the pain stretches further. When combined with all the other price rises, it'll produce a material drop in living standards for most on low to middle incomes. I'll leave the politics and the 'whys' out of it, though for that listen to this Freeze or starve? BBC interview I did. At the end of that, I called for a collective endeavour to help each other. And that's what generated this new 90 ways to survive the cost of living crisis guide. That's because while the team and I were compiling it, we reached out on Twitter, Facebook and the MSE Forum to ask for suggestions. The response was overwhelming and uplifting, 1,000s replied. We added suggestions and testimonials - and hope to keep building on this. Of course, we already have our How to budget guide and the 37 Money Makeover tips guide, but that's about cutting bills without cutting back. The scope here is also about tips to cut back, to be thrifty, on little-known support and more. Here's a taster selection for you... New. Heat the human not the home guide. I felt sad when I asked the team to put this new Heat the human guide together, analysing the cheapest ways to keep warm. Yet I can't ignore my overflowing emailbag of people panicking that they can't afford their energy bill. Don't see it as a 'we say you should', more as options and info if you must drastically cut down on energy usage. As ginger_titch tweeted: "I invested in a heated blanket to use at my desk, it costs 2-4p a day to run, cheaper than heating and so cosy!" Over 800,000 people are eligible for a top-up of their state pension. Pension credit is a tax-free, means-tested benefit aimed at retired people on low incomes and can be worth £1,000s a year. Plus it's a gateway benefit that gives eligibility to council tax discounts, free TV licences for over-75s and more. Check pension credit eligibility. Make do and mend via a Repair Cafe. Forumite Brambling: "If you have broken household items you are unable to repair, check for local Repair Cafes. We've a monthly one where volunteers repair anything from clothes, toys, electricals, computers etc. It's free, but they appreciate a donation of what you can afford. It avoids adding to landfill." The Repair Cafe site lists some of them. 16m people are out of contract on broadband and mobile bills - and could halve bills at speed. Many are on legacy contracts where you simply pay bog-standard full price. Yet two minutes on our Broadband comparison and Cheap Sim comparison can often find deals saving over £200 a year - offsetting some of the impact of energy hikes. Or are you eligible for long-term low-price broadband 'social tariffs', eg, £15/mth? Comparisons list deals which are priced hot for a year, but after, to keep it cheap you need to ditch & switch. Yet if you're on a lower income, for example, claiming universal credit, we've a full list of social tariffs which are cheap long-term. Some looking for work are even eligible for 6mths free broadband. As David emailed: "Martin, thank you for the advice about BT's social tariff, this isn't widely advertised, nor does it come up on comparison sites. Thanks to your website I've switched a friend on to this and he'll save £96/yr." On minimum wage? Are you actually being underpaid? It's thought HALF A MILLION minimum wage employees don't realise they've been underpaid - as they have some unpaid working times, or have to buy things to do their job. If so, you may be due £100s or £1,000s back. Read what to look for in our National minimum wage guide. Choosing between heating and eating? Speak to your local council. Councils have just got a new tranche of £500m for the Household Support Fund - to prioritise money to meet essential costs - you NEEDN'T BE ON BENEFITS. Frustratingly the last tranche just closed, and the new one isn't yet up and running everywhere, but contact your local authority to see if you are or will be eligible (they may also be able to point you to other help).    Struggling to afford period products? As KellyBilsland tweeted us, in Scotland: "Order free period products from your council's website (some have in-person pick-up points). Some include reusable pads, pants and cups in this." Elsewhere, there are a range of other ways to help with period poverty, including asking for an emergency 'Package for Sandy' in Morrisons. See our Cheap or free sanitary products guide for more. Band A-D council tax in England, Scotland or Wales? You are due a £150 rebate to help with energy bills from THIS month. This is one of two measures the Chancellor announced in February. If you pay council tax by direct debit, the £150 should be paid into you bank account, hopefully in April. If you don't pay by DD, you'll be notified how to claim it, and if you don't do that, it'll be a rebate on your bill. See How to ensure you get the £150 council tax help. PS: The other measure is the £200 loan-not-loan due in October. Not in band A-D, but struggling to pay energy bills? I may claim a little of the credit for this, as on a call with the Chancellor three days before his energy announcements, when he said there'd sadly be gaps in help, I suggested a discretionary fund to fill them in. He said 'good idea', then announced £140m for councils to give to those who don't qualify for the £150 rebate - see more on the discretionary payment. Family income under £30,000 (or £50,000 in rare cases)? Spend 10mins to check if you're due benefits. I'm not saying you'll get it, just that at this income level it's worth spending the time, especially if you have children. Even if you're only eligible for a small amount, it can open the door to other support, such as council tax reductions and reduced utility tariffs. Use our 10-minute benefit checker. Attendance allowance ISN'T means-tested, it helps with extra costs for those with disabilities severe enough to need help being looked after. This is an oft overlooked and a really important benefit. Rachel emailed: "I had success with applying for attendance allowance for my 81-yr-old father. It's for people of state pension age who need help to remain in their own home. He received £60/wk and this meant he's also entitled to a higher housing and council tax benefit - so he doesn't need to pay a penny for his council tax bill and only £5/wk towards his rent." The allowance is covered in our 10-minute benefit checker tool. Free KFC, doughnuts, coffee or even get PAID to eat. Take advantage of clever tricks, coupons, apps or cards to eat and drink for nothing (or very cheaply). See Get free or cheap food. Check if your child is eligible for free school meals and the pupil premium. If you're on a means-tested benefit (like universal credit) and have a low income, it's worth a check if your child qualifies for free school meals. Yet it doesn't stop there... Ellie Allen on Facebook wrote: "Filling out the pupil premium paperwork can entitle your child to lots of financial help throughout their school years, with trips, free school meals, free school milk, funding for the school to help your child, and many more positive benefits." It's generally for some on low incomes, apply via your local council. Free food from local bakeries, supermarkets & neighbours. Free food and drink-sharing app Olio offers leftover grub for nowt. Instead of binning surplus food, people sign up to the app and offer it to their local community. Major supermarkets and retailers such as Tesco and Pret - as well as independent outlets - have also jumped on board. Batch and bootstrap cook. Changing cooking patterns can help. BrylewskaF tweeted: "Use your oven to cook multiple things/meals, then freeze the ones you don't need and reheat in the microwave." And if you're trying to scythe down meal costs, anti-poverty campaigner Jack Monroe's Cooking on a Bootstrap site has a host of recipes costed to the penny that may be able to help. Get £1,000 help towards childcare costs. Working pays less if you have to pay for childcare. Whether you have a wee tot or a big teen, the costs can be huge. Yet 100,000s of working parents are missing out on £1,000s of help with these costs. Our Childcare costs guide covers the available schemes. It's worth checking. It's usually cheaper than an oven. Microwaves are high wattage but tend to be used for shorter time periods, and crucially they only heat the food. With an oven, you're heating a much larger area so there's waste. We've estimated that to cook a jacket potato in the microwave, is often substantially less than 25% of doing it in an oven. 100,000s of free water-saving gadgets available - help cut energy bills too. Water firms hand out free water-saving gadgets via water efficiency site Save Water Save Money. These include shower heads, tap inserts and garden hose nozzles. As well as saving money for those on water meters, as much of the water we use is heated, it reduces energy bills too. US bank Chase launches hot new account deal... - A huge BEST-BUY 1.5% easy-access savings - 1% cashback on debit card spending - Near-perfect rates for spending overseas - You NEEDN'T SWITCH to get it (so grab a free £150 elsewhere) Last week we mentioned this account just for its new standout 1.5% savings interest, which is a huge easy-access best buy, and it went ballistic. Martin's view is: "Frankly this is an outstanding deal, almost certainly a loss leader to build a customer base, so grab it while you can and monitor it. My best guess from similar past launches is it'll remain hot for a year-ish, after that we'll see." Here's how it stacks up... Combine this with a FREE £150 and top service account too. Chase is trying to tempt people in with high interest, but the other way banks do this is to give you cold, hard cash to sign up. Our top pick of those is First Direct*, which offers a free £150 to switch to it or £20 just to try it*, and gives many a £250 0% overdraft. Plus it has been top or near top in every customer service poll we've ever done, and is currently rated 90% 'great'. Alternatively, NatWest Reward* gives accepted switchers a free £150 if they apply by 5pm on Thu, plus you gain £3/month if you use the mobile app and pay out two £2+ direct debits each month (you get £5/month, but pay a £2/month fee). So if you're prepared to play, you could switch to one of these for the free £150, then put your savings in Chase, and filter some of your cash in there to spend each month to get the cashback. Amazon Warehouse Ever applied for a loan / credit card and got a higher rate than advertised? Time to change that. We've launched a new campaign to shift the UK back to 'typical APRs', where at least 66% of accepted customers must get the advertised rate. In 2011, an EU rule moved us to the current 'representative rates', meaning only 51% needed to get it. The rest can be charged more, and it's not capped. Flight cancellations - what are your rights? This week Easyjet and BA have both cancelled flights due to staff being off with Covid. With the busy Easter period coming up, we've full details on your refund rights. On a price-capped energy tariff (most are)? Have you done a meter reading? The cap jumped a hideous 54% on Friday. Doing a meter reading now reduces the risk firms will wrongly allocate any of your pre-rise usage to the new higher cost. You've then usually got a week to submit the reading. HAPPY NEW TAX YEAR... WEDNESDAY (6 APRIL) IS THE FIRST DAY Check your new take-home pay, fill up your LISA for £1,000 free cash, grab a cash ISA? and more Big Ben isn't chiming, fireworks aren't fizzing, but nevertheless Wednesday 6 April marks a New (Tax) Year. It's when ISA allowances renew, you get a new tax code and your take-home pay changes. So what should you be doing? EMPLOYEE? Find your NEW take-home pay & check your tax code. We've updated our Income Tax and National Insurance Calculator for the new tax year (the big change right now being that national insurance rates have increased by 1.25 percentage points), plus it includes further changes to the NI threshold coming in July. Equally important is our Free Tax Code Calculator - use it to check if your 2022/23 tax code is correct. Your tax code is a series of letters and numbers (for example, 1257L) which tells your employer or pension provider what tax to deduct. However, millions of codes could be wrong, like Stephen's was: "Thanks so much for your tip to check my tax code. I had a benefit-in-kind figure affecting it after I switched from a company car five years ago, and am due a rebate of almost £5,000." FIRST-TIME BUYER (OR WANT TO BE ONE DAY)? Get a FREE £1,000. A Lifetime ISA gives first-time buyers a 25% bonus on up to £4,000 saved each tax year, meaning you can get an additional £1,000/year free. Though you'll need to be aged 18-39 to open one. Our Top LISAs guide has full info. SAVER? You've a new cash ISA allowance, but most shouldn't bother (in fact, most should ditch cash ISAs). A cash ISA is just a savings account you can put up to £20,000 per tax year in. With one, the interest is tax-free and doesn't count towards the personal savings allowance (PSA). Yet the PSA means 20% basic-rate taxpayers can earn £1,000 interest a year from all savings tax-free, and higher 40% taxpayers, £500 interest - and few people get close to that, so there's no practical cash ISA benefit for them. Instead the interest rate is what counts, and cash ISAs pay less than normal savings... Cash ISAs have WORSE rates than normal savings in all categories All accounts below have the full UK £85,000 savings safety guarantee Top savings   Top cash ISAs Easy access (AER variable) - Chase Bank 1.5% (via its bank account - see above) - Cynergy Bank 1.1% (min £1) - Ecology BS 0.8% (min £25) 1-year fixed rate  - Zopa 1.81% (min £1k). The only caveats to that are if you're near the limit where you'll earn enough interest to pay tax on savings, as with interest rates likely to rise, keeping money in cash ISAs now can protect you from future tax, or if you're happy to lock cash away but think there's still a chance you'll need to access it - as fixed cash ISAs let you withdraw money (for a penalty). INVESTOR? You've a new stocks & shares ISA allowance. The same £20,000 ISA allowance for this tax year applies across cash AND stocks & shares, meaning you can save in one, both or neither. See Stocks & shares ISAs for help to get started.   MARRIED/CIVIL-PARTNERED? Claim up to £1,250 tax back if you're eligible for marriage tax allowance. If one of you is a non-taxpayer and the other is a basic 20% taxpayer, you can transfer tax-free allowances between you, so you pay less tax as a couple. It's worth up to £252 in 2022/23, but backdate it the full four years allowed and it can be worth a further £990. While there's no urgent deadline, do it now while you remember - and once you sign up, you get it every year. Full help in our Marriage tax allowance guide. SELF-EMPLOYED/FREELANCE? Put a third of what you earn aside to pay tax. It's crucial to get tax right at the start of the year. Martin's rule of thumb is for every £100 you're paid, put about £30 aside in a separate account you never touch for tax and national insurance (hopefully this is too high, in which case you'll have saved a touch). If you don't have money aside to pay tax, it can be a nightmare when the bill comes in. Martin's warning to freelancers and the self-employed everywhere blog was written a decade ago, but it's still just as relevant today.

 

Ends Thu. Got credit card debt? Pay NO INTEREST for 30 months (1.5% fee) + get £20 cashback. A balance transfer is where you get a new card that repays debt on old cards for you, so you owe it instead, but interest-free. Sainsbury's up to 30 month 0%* is the top-pick long deal for large amounts, as until 11.59pm on Thursday it gives £20 cashback if you shift £2,500+. Though it's best to use our 0% Eligibility Calculator first to see your acceptance odds for this and other top cards. Golden rules: Always repay at least the monthly minimum, and clear the card before the 0% ends or it's 19.9% rep APR interest. THIS WEEK'S POLL Energy smart meters: great tech or a pain in the neck? More than 26 million smart meters have been installed across England, Scotland and Wales. They automatically send meter readings to your supplier, and come with in-home displays to show you your energy usage in real time - so they can help you identify where you can cut back. Yet they're not without issues - for example, older models may go 'dumb' if you switch provider. So what's your opinion of smart meters? Men are more likely to ask for a pay rise. Last week, we wanted to know if you'd ever asked for a pay rise - over 1,800 people responded. Overall, four in 10 had successfully asked for a raise, though men were more likely to request one in the first place, with 63% having done so vs 56% of women.
